GRENDON, in Domesday “Grendone,” is a parish on the road from Atherstone to Tamworth, about 3 miles from Atherstone station, on the Trent Valley section of the London and North Western railway, in the Northern division of the county, Tamworth division of the hundred of Hemlingford, Atherstone petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Polesworth, archdeaconry of Birmingham and diocese of Worcester. The river Anker and the Coventry canal pass through the parish. The church of All Saints is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, south porch, and an embattled western tower with four pinnacles, and containing a clock and 5 bells; the stained east window was presented by the late Sir George Chetwynd bart. in memory of his wife, Lady Charlotte Augustus Chetwynd, who died November 24th, 1861; there is also a memorial window to Sir G. Chetwynd, who died 24th March, 1869; and other stained windows, exhibiting the armorial bearings of the Chetwynds from an early period; there are 300 sittings, 150 being free. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a rectory, average yearly value arising from tithe rent-charge £425, including 27 acres of glebe, with residence in the gift of Sir George Chetwynd bart. and held since 1844 by the Rev. Henry Hanmer M.A. of New Inn Hall, Oxford. There is a Free Methodist chapel. Grendon Hall, the seat of Sir George Chetwynd bart. lord of the manor and principal landowner, is a noble and spacious structure, and was almost rebuilt and entirely refronted in 1825; the river Anker flows through the park, and there are extensive flower gardens; this estate has been possessed by the Chetwynd family since the year 1320. The soil is mixed; subsoil, marl and gravel. The chief crops are barley, wheat, oats and roots. There are 2,100 acres; rateable value, £8,466; the population in 1891 was 681.
