Historical Description
The village of Halford, which takes its name from its old ford over the Stour. A little to the north is Lower Eatington, the seat of Eveleyn Shirley, Esq.
HALFORD (or Halford Bridge, as it is commonly called) is a parish about half a mile off the high road from Birmingham to Oxford and on the river Stour, 3 miles south from Ettington station on the East and West Junction railway, and 3 ½ north from Shipston-on-Stour station on a branch of the Great Western railway, and 7 ½ miles south from Stratford-on-Avon, in the South-Western division of the county, Kineton division of Kineton hundred, Brailes petty sessional division, Shipston-on-Stour union and county court district, rural deanery of South Kineton and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. This place is supposed to have taken its name from the ford over the Stour, and was originally called Alford, i.e. Oldford. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Norman and Gothic styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 3 bells, one of which is considered the most curious and probably the oldest in the county, and another inscribed “Sancta Katarina ora pro nobis,” but recast in 1883. The church was reopened May 15th, 1862, after having been thoroughly restored at a cost of upwards of £700, principally contributed by the late T. Mason esq. and the Rev. C. W. Simons and friends, and the chancel was improved and decorated in 1883 by the present rector; there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1545, but is deficient from 1720-48. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £220, including 183 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Anthony Laurie M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. The charities belonging to this parish have been applied in building a few cottages, the rents arising therefrom are expended in repairs, with the exception of £1 yearly which is applied in the reduction of the rates. The chief landowners are Thomas Cooke esq of the Manor house, and Tamworth Castle, Staffs, J. Paget esq. 28 Boltons, West Brompton, London S W, Sewallis Evelyn Shirley esq. M.A., J.P., D.L. of Ettington Park, and the rector. The soil is clayey; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are beans, wheat, oats and barley. The area is 908 acres; rateable value, £1,283; the population in 1891 was 283 in the civil, & 245 in the ecclesiastical parish.
School (mixed), erected by public subscription in 1868, for 70 children; average attendance about 46.
