Historical Description

HAMPTON LUCY is a village and parish adjoining Charlecote, on the banks of the Avon, about 4 miles north-east from Stratford-upon-Avon, in the South-Western division of the county, Snitterfield division of Barlichway hundred, Stratford and Snitterfield petty sessional division, Stratford-upon-Avon union and county court district, rural deanery of North Kineton and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester: a cast iron bridge of elegant structure was thrown over the river Avon in 1829 by the Rev. John Lucy, late rector of the parish. The place was originally called “Bishop’s Hampton,” from its having belonged to the Bishops of Worcester; but upon its being given by Queen Mary to the Lucy family, the parish took the name of Hampton Lucy. The church of St. Peter is a large edifice of stone, in the Decorated style of the 14th century, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, aisles, north porch with parvise, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 1 bell, the porch was built in part from a fund left by Mrs. Alice Hammond, the widow of a former rector, augmented by the munificent addition made to it by the late rector, and was finished in the year 1826: in 1858, an apse, dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Hammond was added to the chancel by the late rector, from designs by the late Sir George Gilbert Scott R.A.: it is lighted by five very fine large windows, containing, in 10 compartments, the principal acts of St. Peter’s life, together with the arms of Queen Mary and Philip of Spain, the see of Worcester, and the Lucy family: the chancel has two large and beautiful windows, and stalls exquisitely carved in oak; the nave benches are of carved elm, and there is a brass eagle lectern, and a fine oak pulpit, standing on a stone base, supported by columns of Devonshire marble, and given by a lady resident in the parish: the total cost of the rebuilding was £23,400: in 1876, a window was inserted on the north side to the memory of the Rev. John Lucy, late rector, by whose liberality a statue of St. Peter, the patron saint of the church, had been placed in a niche over the north porch: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1553. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge, £875, including 5 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Fairfax-Lucy, and held since 1874 by the Rev. Osbert Mordaunt M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. At Ingon is a chapel of ease to Hampton, erected in 1876, at a cost of £600, chiefly raised by the gentry of the neighbourhood; it is a building in the Gothic style, consisting of nave with a small eastern apse, and a western bell-cote containing one bell; divine service is held on Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Fairfax-Lucy is lady of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is various; subsoil, marl and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, and turnips. The area is 3,160 acres; rateable value, £3,951; the population in 1891 was 395 in the civil and 454 in the ecclesiastical parish.

A Free Grammar school was founded & endowed here in 1635 by Richard Hill, then rector, for the education of boys belonging to the parishes of Hampton Lucy, Charlecote, Alveston & Wasperton: the school, by a revised scheme, was in 1867 thrown open to all comers, each boy paying a capitation fee, which is doubled in the case of boys not belonging to the parish: there are two exhibitions to Hertford College, Oxford, of about £30 a year each, founded by Dr. Lucy, in 1750, the operations of the school have, however, been for some time suspended for want of funds, & the building is used for the village school.
