Historical Description

The village of Hatton is the residence and living of Dr. Parr; about three miles to the east of which, on the opposite side of Wedgnock-Park, is Blaeklow-Hill, where Gaveston, Earl of Cornwall, having been surprised by Guy de Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, and the Earl of Lancaster, was forced by them from the rest of the barons, who were conveying him to London, and carried to the top of the hill, and there beheaded without any farther process. On the spot was erected a cross, called Gavestou's Cross, and on the south side of the hill near the top is cut in a rock, among other letters, this inscription: 1311. P. Gaveston, Earl of Cornwall, beheaded here.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HATTON, a name contracted, as Dugdale thinks, from Heathton,” is a village and parish, with a junction station one mile from the centre of the village for the Stratford-on-Avon and Honeybourne branch of the Great Western railway, 3 miles west-by-north from Warwick, 6 south-west from Kenilworth and 112 from London, in the South-Western division of the county, Snitterfield division of Barlichway hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Warwick, rural deanery of Warwick and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The Warwick and Birmingham canal passes through the south of the parish, and from Hatton Hill a fine view can be obtained of the surrounding country. The church of Holy Trinity was rebuilt of stone, with the exception of the tower, in 1880, at a cost of £4,000, raised by subscription, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch, and an embattled western tower of the 15th century, containing a clock and 6 bells, all cast or recast in 1809-17, mainly at the expense of the learned Dr. Samuel Parr, resident minister here 1783-1825, and recently (1895) recast and rehung: the tower has a fine Perpendicular window of six lights; the former nave, erected under the supervision of Dr. Parr, possessed little architectural value, and the chancel, although part of the old church, had windows of modern date; all the ancient stained glass is now placed in the west window; the stained east window was presented by J. T. Arkwright esq. as a memorial to his wife: the church contains a number of mural monuments of the eighteenth century to the families of Norcliffe, Bree and others; a tablet to the memory of Dr. Parr, who died 6th of March, 1825, and to members of his family, is affixed to the south wall of the chancel: in the churchyard, and south of the tower, is a large yew tree, the sole survivor of four once standing here, one of which was wantonly destroyed by fire: there are sittings for 350 persons, 170 being free. The register of burials begins 1538; baptisms, 1589; weddings, 1589: there is a break from 1637 to 1615, as well as other missing years. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £98, net yearly value £185, including glebe (£60), with residence, in the gift of E. Southwell Trafford esq. and held since 1893 by the Rev. Henry Trethewy M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. There is a Congregational chapel at Shrewley. The charities are:-Edwards’s, of about £230 annually; Throckmorton’s, of £30; Norcliffe’s, of £10; Baker’s, of £500; and Jackson’s, of £100, invested in stock. Alfred Hewlett esq. of Haseley Manor, who is lord of the manor, the Earl of Warwick, John Thomas Arkwright esq. D.L., J.P. The Ven. Archdeacon William Bree M.A. rector of Allesley, the Rev. George Hesketh Biggs M.A. vicar of Ettington, and Edward S. Trafford esq. of Wroxham Hall, Norwich, are the principal landowners. The soil is gravelly; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are cereals and roots, and some land in pasture. The area is 1,308 acres; rateable value, £6,395; the population of the civil parish in 1891 was 1,056, including 754 in the county asylum. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1891, which includes Beausale and Shrewley, was 1,664.

The County Lunatic Asylum, opened in 1852, is a well designed edifice of brick, standing in 82 acres of land, partly laid out in pleasure grounds & the rest as meadow and arable land; also a leasehold farm of about 200 acres, adjoining the asylum. The institution is available for 950 patients, 200 of whom (chiefly chronic lunatics and idiots), occupy a separate building, erected in 1871-72; and there is also an Infectious Hospital, available for as many as 22 fever cases. There were in 1895 340 male & 460 female patients & a staff of upwards of 100 attendants & servants.
