Historical Description
HUNNINGHAM (or Honyngham), in Domesday “Hyningeham,” is a parish and village pleasantly seated on the river Leam, 3 miles west-north-west from Marton railway station on the Rugby and Leamington branch of the London and North-Western railway, 5 north-east from Leamington, 5 ½ north-west from Southam, and 95 by road and 104 by rail from London, in the South-Eastern division of the county, Southam division of the hundred of Knightlow, petty sessional division of Kenilworth, union and county court district of Warwick, rural deanery of Leamington, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The Roman Fosseway passes through the parish. The church of St. Margaret, anciently a chapel belonging to Wappenbury, and therewith appropriated to the monks of Kirby and of Sulby in Northamptonshire, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, and a small wooden tower containing 2 bells. The church was restored in 1868, and affords sittings for 195 persons, of which 117 are free. The register dates from the year 1718. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £90 including 25 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1894 by the Rev. John Pugh Cranston M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. The charities are of £4 annual value. This manor, sold in 1695 to Thomas, Lord Leigh, by Mr. Henry Vane, had been held in several previous reigns by the families of Coates and Cokesey, but in the Conqueror’s time it was held by the family of Corbicon, and then by the D’Eyvills. The Elms is the residence of William George Hunter esq. J.P. Lord Leigh L.L., P.C. who is lord of the manor, Lord Clifford, Beauchamp Henry John Scott esq. J.P. of Eathorpe hall and W. G. Hunter esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The soil varies from light loam to marl; the subsoil gravel and clay. The crops are wheat, barley and peas. The area is 1,208 acres; rateable value, £1,758; the population in 1891 was 240.
