Historical Description
A short distance to the south of Blithe-Hall is a village called Maxstoke, formerly noted on account of its Priory, founded in the reign of Edward III. for Augustine monks. Part of this abbey is still standing, from which it appears to have been originally a stately and magnificent structure.
About a mile from this priory, one of the earls of Huntingdon built a strong castle, as a seat for himself and his successors, but it afterwards fell into other hands. The whole of this stately building is still standing, it having been repaired at different times, and is one of the best ancient edifices in the kingdom. The gate is extremely curious; at each of the, corners are lofty lowers with battlements, and behind, as well as on each side, are gardens laid out with taste and elegance.
MAXSTOKE, in Domesday “Machitone,” is a parish and village consisting of a few scattered houses, 3 miles south-east from Coleshill and 2 south-east from Coleshill station, on the Hampton and Whitacre branch of the Midland railway in the Northern division of the county, Atherstone division of Hemlingford hundred, Coleshill petty sessional division, union of Meriden, county court district of Birmingham, rural deanery of Coleshill, archdeaconry of Birmingham, and diocese of Worcester. The river Blythe flows through the north-western extremity of the parish. The church of St. Michael is a small and ancient building of stone, in the Decorated style, consisting of nave, vestry, and a low embattled western turret, containing 2 bells: the east window was restored in 1879 at the expense of Lord Leigh, and the floor of the east end of the church relaid with encaustic tiles designed from examples found at the priory: in 1886 the rest of the windows were filled with tinted glass and an ancient cross in the churchyard restored, and in 1887 a font was presented by the vicar: there are 200 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1653, and of marriages from 1654, but the earlier portions of all appear to have been irregularly made, and the baptisms particularly so. The living is a discharged vicarage, gross yearly value £194, including three acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Leigh, and held since 1869 by the Rev. Samuel Back M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Near the churchyard are the ruins of a noble gateway, the tower of the church and other remains of the priory erected here by William de Clinton, Earl of Huntington, in the 10th of Edward III. and dedicated to SS. Mary, Michael and All Saints, for a prior and twelve canons Tegular of the order of St. Augustine, and was founded by him for the good estate of the souls of himself, Julian his wife, and that of King Edward III.: a portion of the site of the priory is now occupied by a farm house. In the north-west part of the parish, in a finely timbered deer park of about 150 acres, stands Maxstoke Castle, a fortified residence, licence to crenellate which was granted to William de Clinton in the 19th year of Edward III. (1345-6), and the outer walls with the four corner towers and the gate house are quite perfect, the moat and bridge also remaining; the space within the walls consists of a courtyard; the present timbered dwelling house, rebuilt in the 17th century, occupies one side of the quadrangle and is incorporated with the more ancient buildings. The banqueting hall, a noble room dating from 1346, contains numerous ancient relics, and in a room adjoining is a magnificent carved oar mantelpiece. The hall is on the first floor, and has low rooms under it, one of which is vaulted; placed transversely across the end of the hall is the chapel, two storeys in height, and retaining a late Decorated west window of the reign of Edward III.; the kitchen is on the opposite side of the chapel: the Castle is now the property of Beaumont Fetherston esq. in whose family it has been since the reign of Queen Elizabeth, and is occupied by Charles Edward Malcolm esq. Lord Leigh, lord lieut., is lord of the priory manor, and Beaumont Fetherston esq. lord of the castle manor; these are also the principal landowners. The soil is generally a reddish loam, on a clay and gravel subsoil. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,663 acres; rateable value, £3,145; the population in 1891 was 224.
National School (mixed), with residence for mistress & partly supported by a small endowment, for 43 children; average attendance, 30.
