Historical Description
MEREVALE, at an earlier period written “Miravalle,” is a large parish, in the North-Eastern division of the county, and in the Atherstone division of Hemlingford hundred, Atherstone petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Polesworth, archdeaconry of Birmingham and diocese of Worcester; the Atherstone station, on the Trent Valley section of the London and North-Western Railway, is in this parish, which at the Norman survey belonged to Grendon. The church of St. Mary the Virgin was originally a chapel erected near the gate of the Abbey of Merevale, chiefly for the holding of early services for the benefit of the labourers and servants connected with the monastery; it appears to have been built in the reign of Henry III. or Edward I. and originally consisted of nave and aisles, with arcades of two arches on either side, and a chancel: the chancel has disappeared, and the aisles have been demolished, so that nothing now remains of the ancient structure but the nave, which forms a kind of ante-chapel to the present church, the main portion of which, now constituting the chancel, has a north aisle of late fifteenth century date, south aisle of the fourteenth century and a turret containing 2 bells; the east window is a peculiarly interesting example of this period, and is filled with ancient glass removed from, the conventual church; there is also a portion of a Jesse window, and in the north aisle some glass of the fifteenth century, to which date also belongs a curious wooden loft or gallery, the old pre-Reformation brief desk, and afterwards used as an organ loft; of the monuments removed hither from the abbey church there remain the brasses of a knight and his lady, temp. Henry VI. together with monuments to the Stratford and Dugdale families; there is also a handsome altar tomb of alabaster with recumbent figures, conjectured by Mr. M. H. Blosham F.S.A. to represent John Handewell, sheriff or bailiff of Coventry, and Alice, his wife, to wham there was ah inscription in a north window, and the remains of an effigy in chain armour, covered with a long sleeveless surcoat and with a long heater shaped shield on the left arm, and a sword on the right side; the head and feet are gone, but the effigy is probably of the thirteenth century, and is supposed to represent William Ferrers, Earl of Derby, who died in 1254: during the excavations instituted to identify the site and foundations of the abbey, three stone coffins were discovered: there are 120 sittings, 40 being free: during the period 1874-91, restorations were effected at a cost of £643, and in 1893 the church was thoroughly restored at a cost of about £3,000. The register dates from the year 1721. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £26, in the gift of W. F. S. Dugdale esq. and held since 1873 by the Rev. Hugh Bacon M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford, who is also rector of and resides at Baxterley. The Cistercian Abbey of Merevale was founded in 1149 by Robert, Earl Ferrers, grandson of Henry de Ferrers, one of the followers of the Conqueror, and was dedicated, according to the invariable custom of the Cistercian order, to the Blessed Virgin. The buildings consisted of a cruciform church, with rather short choir, south of which was a cloister court, surrounded by the conventual apartments and offices of the church, which measured 230 by 54 feet, considerable portions of the foundation walls on the north and east are still existing: on the south side of the cloister court stood the refectory, a rather noble room of the fourteenth century, much of which, with a portion of its pulpit, still remains, together with the monks' lavatory near the entrance; westward of the abbey, at a distance of about 200 yards, was the gate house, which has wholly disappeared. In the church of Orton-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire, formerly belonging to this abbey, is an effigy in stone of one of the abbots, habited as a Cistercian monk, with the head resting on a pillow beneath a trefoiled canopy. In 1849 the site of the abbey church was excavated and its entire ground plan traced under the superintendence of Mr. Clutton, architect, of London. At its dissolution in Henry VIII.'s reign, the site was granted to Sir Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers of Chartley, one of whose successors in the 17th century sold it to a member of the Stratford family, in which line it came to Dugdiale Stratford Dugdale esq. and thence to the present owner, William Francis Stratford Dugdale esq. J.P. whose seat, Merevale Hall, is situated on an eminence 400 feet above the sea level, and in the midst of a beautiful park, and commands a fine view of the surrounding country: here is preserved the library of Sir William Dugdale kt. M.A. Garter King-at-Arms, the famous antiquary, and his curious and minutely detailed diary, which is, in its way, as quaint and interesting as that of Mr. Samuel Pepys. William Francis Stratford Dugdale esq. is lord of the manor. The soil is various; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans. The area is 1,100 acres; rateable value £2,308; the population in 1891 was 103. By a Local Government Order which came into operation March 25, 1885, a detached part of Merevale was amalgamated with Sheepy Magna, in Leicestershire, and at the same date the portion of Merevale formerly in that county, containing a population of 77 and area of 1,050 acres, was amalgamated with Orton-on-the-Hill, also in Leicestershire.
The children of this parish attend the National School at Bentley.
