Historical Description
MORTON BAGOT, in Domesday “Mortone,” obtained its adjunct of “Bagot,” from a family of that name, who for long resided there, and were owners of property in the place: it is a parish on the Worcestershire border of the county, 3 ½ miles south-west from Henley-in-Arden, 7 miles north from Alcester, and 5 east from the Studley station on the Evesham and Aschurch branch of the Midland railway, in the South-Western division of the county, Alcester division of Barlichway hundred, Alcester petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Alcester, and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church of Holy Trinity was granted by the Canons of Kenilworth to Peter de Mora about 1253, and they continued patrons until 1361, after which the parsonage was long held by the family of Trussell: the church, a building of stone of the Early English period, is surrounded by scenery of varied character; architecturally it is unattractive, consisting simply of chancel, nave, south porch, and a small timber-framed belfry containing 2 bells: in the chancel is a mural tablet to the family of Holyoake: inscribed stones on the floor bear the names of Burton (1700-61) and Chambers (1735): the church was re-pewed in 1844, and further restoration was carried out in 1876: there are sittings for 100 persons. The register of baptisms dates from January 7th, 1663, and of marriages and burials from July. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe modus £135, gross income £147, with 25 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Thomas Eades Walker esq. and held since 1874 by the Rev. James Cooper Farmborough S.C.L. of Hertford College, Oxford. The trustees of the late Thomas Eades Walker esq. are lords of the manor and owners of all the land except the glebe. The soil is various, mostly stiff; subsoil, principally marl and gravel. The land is nearly all laid out in pasturage. The area is 1,100 acres; rateable value £895; the population in 1881 was 86, and in 1891, 74.
