The Warwick and Napton canal, on which are three locks, passes through the parish. The church of St. Gregory, anciently appropriated to the monastery of Coventry, is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave and south porch, and a tower containing a clock and 4 bells; it has several stained windows and monuments to Thomas Wightwick Knightley, 1686; and John Wightwick Knightley, 1,814; besides tablets to the same family; there are 200 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1669, but is irregular till 1682; marriages, 1689; burials, 1683. The living is a discharged vicarage, average tithe rent £228; gross yearly value £328, including 7 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of Jane, Countess of Aylesford, and held since 1880 by the Rev. John Adams, of St. John’s College, Oxford. Offchurch Bury, the seat of Jane, Countess of Aylesford, is an ancient mansion, of stone in the Gothic style, the earliest portions of which belong to the time of Henry VIII. and is situated on the banks of the Leam, in a park covering from 200 to 300 acres, and containing some fine elm and walnut trees, and in front of the house is a magnificent chestnut tree, the branches of which are capable of sheltering at least 300 persons. The manor, in Edward the Confessor’s reign, belonged to Earl Leofric, and it was afterwards held, together with the advowson of the living and other property, by the Benedictine priory of Coventry. At the Dissolution, Offchurch was granted to Sir Edward Knightley, and it remained with this family until the marriage of Jane, only child and heiress of John W. Knightley esq. with Heneage, Lord Guernsey, afterwards 6th Earl of Aylesford, when it passed to the Finch family. Jane, Countess of Aylesford, is lady of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is of a mixed nature; subsoil, marl and clay. The principal crops are wheat, barley, peas, beans, turnips and mangold-wurtzel. The area is 2,273 acres; rateable value, £2,845; the population of the parish in 1891 was 308.
