Historical Description

OXHILL, in Domesday “Octseelve,” is a parish and village in a fertile valley, 4 miles south from Kineton station on the East and West Junction railway, 10 northwest from Banbury, 6 north-east from Shipston-on-Stour and 14 south-east from Warwick, in the South-Eastern division of the county, Kineton division of Kineton hundred, Burton Dassett and Kington petty sessional division, Shipston-on-Stour union and county court district, rural deanery of South Kineton and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Lawrence is a building of stone of Norman origin, possessing considerable historical interest, and consists of chancel, nave, north porch and an embattled western tower in the Perpendicular style, with pinnacles, and containing 5 bells, two of which are new, and one other has been recast and a carillon chiming apparatus fixed: the chancel was restored in 1865, a new east window of Decorated character being inserted, the roof panelled in oak, and stalls added of the same material: during the years 1877 and 1878 further restorations were carried out from the designs of Messrs. Bodley and Garner, of London, including the insertion of new windows (replacing others of an incongruous character, erected early in the present century) and the fixing of an oak chancel screen and new benches, also of oak: an ancient font, which had long been missing, was also replaced on its former site by the late E. P. Shirley esq. lord of the manor: all the memorial stones covering the floor have been carefully relaid, and among these, in the centre of the nave, is an inscribed slab to Daniel Blackford, a Royalist officer, who died October 25th, 1681, set. 59, with the following lines: —

“When I was yovnge, I ventered life and blood, Both for my kinge, and for my countrey’s good.

In elder years my care was chief to be Souldier for him, that shed his blood for me.”

There are also monumental inscriptions to the names of Beauchamp (1710), Peppen (1647), and to the Rev. Nicholas Meese S.T.P. a former vicar (1715), and others of his family (1712-3). The Catesbys, referred to in the account given of Lapworth parish, held this manor from 21 Edward HI. to 1 Henry VII. The registers date from the year 1568. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £120, derived from tithe rent-charge £1, and 273 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Miss M. C. Caddell, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Joseph Cornelius Hill, of St. Bees. There is a Wesleyan chapel, which has been rebuilt. Sewallis Evelyn Shirley esq. of Ettington Park, is lord of the manor, and owns a small farm here, which has belonged to his family since the 14th century. The principal landowners are the Rector, Samuel Price, Henry C. Wilkins and Nicholas Middleton esqs. the Directors of the Law Life Assurance Co. and William Trumper esq. of Windsor. The soil is clay; subsoil, blue lias. The crops are wheat, beans and oats. The area is 1,768 acres; rateable value, £1,636; the population in 1891 was 209.

A School Board of 5 members was formed November 12, 1873.

Board School (mixed), built in 1871, at a cost of £500, for 70 children; average attendance, 23.
