Historical Description
RATLEY, in Domesday, “Rotelei,” is a parish and village on the Oxfordshire border, surrounded by Edge Hill and other lofty hills, on which great quantities of cattle feed; it is 6 miles south-west from Fenny Compton station on the Great Western and East and West Junction railways, 4 ½ south-east from Kineton station on the latter railway, 7 north-west from Banbury, 15 south-east from Warwick and 82 from London, in the South-Eastern division of the county, Burton Dassett division of Kineton hundred, Burton Dassett and Kington petty sessional division, Banbury union and county court district, rural deanery of Dassett Magna, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Peter is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, north porch and a western tower containing 3 bells: the columns of the arcades are without capitals, a feature common to but very few churches in the country: there are sittings for 175 persons, 100 being free. The register dates from the year 1701. The living is a discharged vicarage, average tithe rent-charge, £37, net yearly value £96, including 44 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Ibbott Alfred Mason B.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. There is a Methodist chapel here. This place abounds in stone quarries, which give employment to many of its inhabitants; the stone known as “Edge Hill stone,” is much used for building purposes and road repairing. Nadbury, on Edge Hill, is the site of a British camp, but was most probably occupied afterwards by the Romans, as there is a line of small Roman encampments within signalling distance of each other along the range of the Edge hills; the actual site of the battle of Edge Hill, which took place 23 Oct. 1642, is in Radway parish and in this parish is also a popular place of resort for pleasure parties, the fine view being a special attraction, and there are quoit, bowl and tennis grounds, tea gardens, and a round beacon tower &c. Upton House is the residence of Lord Chesham and Lady Chesham. The Earl of Jersey P.C. is lord of the manor, and Messrs. George Douglas, Henry Jones, and Henry Lander esq. are principal landowners. The soil is a rich marl; subsoil, rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 1,634 acres; rateable value, £2,152; the population in 1891 was 377.
School, erected in 1849, for about 80 children, is partly supported from the rents of lands in the parishes of Radway & Ratley; average attendance, 69.
