Historical Description

ROWINGTON, in Domesday “Rochintone,” is a parish 1 ½ miles south-east from Kingswood station on the Oxford and Birmingham section of the Great Western railway, 6 north-west-by-west from Warwick, 9 south-west from Kenilworth and 95 from London, in the South-Western division of the county, Henley division of Barlichway hundred, Henley petty sessional division, Warwick union and county court district, rural deanery of Warwick and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The Birmingham and Warwick canal passes through the parish. The present church of St. Lawrence, an edifice of stone, granted to the Abbey of Reading in the reign of Henry I. remained the property of the house until the Dissolution, since which it has been in the possession of the Bishop; it is perhaps unique in its arrangement, arising, possibly, from its original design as a cruciform building being interrupted: it consists of chancel, chantry chapel extending along the north side and divided from the chancel by an ancient carved oak screen, a short nave of two bays with very narrow aisles, a tower rising out of the nave at its eastern end, beyond which the nave seems to reappear at the lesser width, and a shallow transept on the south side of the tower; the character of many portions of this church have so little definition as to render their assignment to any particular style or age a matter of difficulty, but the greater part of the building appears to belong to the 15th century; the tower is of two stages, with a battlemented parapet, and contains 5 bells restored in 1887; two are dated respectively 1609 and 1620, and the rest 1633; the communion table belongs to the Tudor period, and has elaborately carved bulging legs, very similar in design to that at Lapworth; the east window is stained, and there are two others, both memorials; the ancient stained glass has been collected in one window in the chancel: there are a considerable number of inscribed monuments, of which may be noted John Hill, Bayliff of Rowington; John Oldnall and Isabel his wife, 1558; John Woollaston, of Ryselippe, 1615; John Hancockes, 1619; Jane, wife of John Milborne, 1681; and Elizabeth, widow of Thomas Woollaston, of Sutton Courtney, Berks, 1685: there are also memorials to several former vicars from 1726 to 1812, as well as to the families of Aston, Bradbury, Reeve, Smallbrocke, Knight and Wallis; the church was restored in 1872, at a cost of £2,000, most of which was raised in the parish: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1638. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge, £175, net yearly value £303, including 38 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester, and held since 1853 by the Rev. Peter Bellinger Brodie M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, rector of Baddesley Clinton, and surrogate. There is a small chapel of ease at Lowsonford, built in 1877, at a cost of £670, with 120 sittings and a Congregational chapel. The charities amount to about £200 a year. This manor was bestowed by King Henry VIII. upon his Queen Catherine Parr, as part of her jointure, subsequently Queen Elizabeth granted it to Dudley, Eart of Warwick. Fredk. Knight esq. of Whateley Hall, Castle Bromwich, is now lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. Dering, of Baddesley Hall, the Ven. William Bree M.A. rector of Allesley, William Francis Stratford Dugdale esq. Frederick Knight esq. George Lyttelton Aston esq, of Cheltenham, the trustees of John Bradbury esq. B. Dugdale esq. and Thomas Beecham. esq. of St. Helen's, Lancs. The geological stratum is new red sandstone (upper keuper), in places capped by gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and pasturage. The area is 3,269 acres; rateable value, £8,352; and the population in 1881 was 853, inclusive of Pinley. By a Local Government order which came into operation March 25th, 1886, a detached part of Wroxall was amalgamated with Rowington.

National School (mixed), erected in 1859, for 150 children; average attendance, 80.
