Birmingham, in the Northern division of the county, Birmingham division of the hundred of Hemlingford, petty sessional division and county court district of Solihull, union of Meriden, rural deanery of Coleshill, archdeaconry of Birmingham and diocese of Worcester. The village is small and but little frequented. The church of St. Giles, an edifice of red sandstone, consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, and a fine Perpendicular tower with canopied openings at the west end, containing a clock and 4 bells: it was thoroughly restored, the north aisle rebuilt, and twelve windows filled with stained glass in 1867, the chief expenses being borne by the patron: the church has some good Early Decorated features, and in the north aisle is a beautiful piece of tabernacle work, consisting of three canopied niches. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, tithe-rent charge £217, net yearly value £389, including 16 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of J. K. D. Wingfield Digby esq. M.P. and held since 1849 by the Rev. J. Burleton Jones-Bateman M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, rural dean of Coleshill, and surrogate. An excellent library, containing some valuable books, is available to all parishioners gratuitously; there is also a collection of old divinity folios, first collected by Thomas Bray D.D. of Hart Hall, Oxford, rector here in 1690, and founder of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel; he died 15th February, 1730, being then rector of St. Botolph’s, Aldgate, London. The manor of Skeldon, or Scheldon, was principally held by the family of Sheldon, from the time of Henry I. or II. until the reign of Edward III. after which it passed through the families of Peto, Bassett, Stafford, Shirly, and Grey, a member of which last family sold it to Sir George Digby, of Coleshill, knight, by whose descendant it is still held. John Kenelm Digby Wingfield-Digby esq. M.P. of Sherborne Castle, Dorset, is lord of the manor and owns nearly all the land. The soil is loamy; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and oats. The area is 2,514 acres; rateable value, £5,103; the population in 1891 was 448.
