Historical Description
SHERBORNE, in Domesday “Scireburne,” is a parish bounded on the south by the river Avon, 2 ½ miles southwest from Warwick station and 102 from London, in the South-Western division of the county, Snitterfield division of the hundred of Barlichway, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Warwick, rural deanery of Warwick and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. There was a church here at the time of the Survey, subsequently granted to the Knights Templars, upon whom a portion of the lordship of Sherborne was bestowed by Roger de Newburgh, Earl of Warwick: since the suppression of that order, the advowson appears to have accompanied the manor, with which it is still united. The present church of All Saints, rebuilt by the late Miss Ryland in 1864, at a cost of £20,000, from designs by the late Sir Gilbert Scott R.A. is a handsome edifice of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, with south chapel, nave, aisles and a western tower with pinnacles and a spire, and containing a clock and 6 bells; this building has taken the place of an earlier one erected in 1747; the chancel of the old church, for some time preserved, appears to have been in the Decorated style of the 14th century: there are several stained windows, that at the west end being a memorial to Mr. and Mrs. Ryland: a new font of white and coloured marble, and a fine reredos of alabaster have also been placed in the church, as well as a pulpit of richly carved oak: there are several monuments in the church to the family of Webb from 1727 to 1869, and south of the chancel is a mortuary chapel belonging to the Ryland family, containing a raised tomb of Caen stone and variously coloured marbles, beautifully carved, to the memory of Samuel Ryland esq. his wife Anne, and his daughter Louisa Anne Ryland, of Barford Hill, from a design by Pugin: in the south aisle is a brass, dated 1624, to John Smith, schoolmaster: there are 350 sittings; the churchyard contains a fine old yew tree, near which, on an octagonal base, remains the shaft of an ancient cross. The register dates from 1587, and comprises seven volumes. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £407, including 32 acres of glebe, in the gift of C. A. Smith-Ryland esq. and held since 1885 by the Rev. William Tomkins M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The vicarage, erected by the late Miss Ryland of Barford Hill, is of red brick, in the Elizabethan style. At the time of the Conquest, this place was the freehold of the two Saxons, Edric, and Leveget, but was granted by the Conqueror to the Earl of Mellent, and came afterwards into the hands of the Templars and Hospitallers, and subsequently to the Crown, from whom the Lucys of Charlecote received the manor, which, passing from them to the Webbs, was sold by the Rev. Elias Webb, incumbent from 1810, to the family of Ryland, by whom it is still held. Sherborne House, the residence of Mrs. Harvey Drummond, is a handsome building, in a well-wooded park and commanding a fine view of the surrounding country; it is the property of C. A. Smith-Ryland esq. J.P. who also owns Morville, now occupied by Major Arthur John Armstrong. C. A. Smith-Ryland esq. of Barford Hill, Warwick, is lord of the manor, and owns the whole of the parish. The soil is marl gravel; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans. The area is 1,088 acres; rateable value, £1,575; the population in 1891 was 191.
