Historical Description

SHILTON, in Domesday “Scelftone” (A. S. Sceala, a hut, and ton, an enclosure), is a parish and small village, on the road from Coventry to Hinckley, with a station on the Trent Valley line of the London and North Western railway, 90 ½ miles from London, 10 north-west from Rugby, 6 south from Nuneaton and 6 north-east from Coventry, in the North-Eastern division of the county, Kirby division of the hundred of Knight low, Coventry petty sessional division and county court district, Foleshill union, rural deanery of Monk’s Kirby, archdeaconry of Coventry, and diocese of Worcester, it once formed part of the parish of St. Michael, Coventry. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone of the 14th century, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a western tower containing 4 bells: in the church was buried Sir Henry St. Germain kt. and Anne, his wife, daughter of Thomas Tindale: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1695. The living was declared a vicarage August 16, 1867, and annexed to that of Shell Ansty, September 16, 1884; average tithe rent-charge £37, joint net yearly value £199, including 63 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Temple Chevallier Pyemont Pyemout, who resides at Ansty. There is a Baptist chapel, erected in 1867, and having 100 sittings. Shilton was the birthplace of Christopher St. Germain, a lawyer of some note in the 16th century, and son of Sir Henry St. Germain kt. mentioned above; his chief work, entitled “Doctor and Student,” published in 1523, was, previous to the publication of Blackstone’s Commentaries, a standard book, and passed through eighteen editions; the author died in London 28 September, 1540, aged more than 80. The Duke of Buccleuch K.T. and G. E. Jarvis esq. of Doddington Park, Lincoln, hold the manorial rights. The principal landowners are Mrs. Woollcombe-Adams, of Ansty Hall, the Rev. Sir Theophilus. Henry Gresley Puleston bart. B.A. rector of Worthenbury, near Wrexham, Flint, and George Jarvis esq. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans; there is also a great quantity of excellent grazing land. The area is 1,075 acres; rateable value, £3,511; the population in 1891 was 350.
