Historical Description
SHOTTESWELL is a village and parish on the Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire borders of the county, 8 miles south-east from Kineton and 4 north-west from Banbury station, in the South-Eastern division of the county, Burton division of Kineton hundred, Burton Dassett and Kington petty sessional division, Banbury union and county court district, Dassett Magna rural dieanery, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Lawrence, standing on an eminence, is an ancient edifice of Hornton stone, in the Early Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch, and a western tower with spire, containing a clock and 5 bells; it was thoroughly restored in 1875, the chancel at the expense of the late Colonel J. S. North M.P. and the rest of the church by subscription, and affords 180 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from 1564; marriages, 1566. The living is a discharged vicarage, gross yearly value from 90 acres of glebe £100, net £85, with residence, in the gift of Lord) North, and held since 1889 by the Rev. John Daunt. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, with 80 sittings. The charities consist of about two acres of land, called “the Maiden Dole,” let at the annual rent of £6 6s. part of which sum is distributed on Maundy Thursday in bread, and the remaindler in money, one loaf of bread being distributed annually to each parishioner, and the balance of the rent triennially to the labouring poor; there is also a small charity left by the Rev. William Harrison, yearly value 16s. 10s. Lord North is lord of the manor, who, together with Thomas White, William Hartley and Brasenose College, Oxford, are the chief landowners. The soil is Ted clay; subsoil, rock. The chief crops are oats, wheat, barley and beans. The area is 1,860 acres; rateable value, £2,217; the population in 1891 was 246.
