Historical Description

SHUSTOKE, in Domesday “Scotescote,” is a village and parish adjoining the parish of Maxstoke to the northwest, on the high road from Birmingham to Atherstone, with a station on the Leicester and Birmingham branch of the Midland railway, 13 miles from Birmingham and 2 ½ north-east from Coleshill, in the Northern division of the county, Atherstone division of the hundred of Hemlingford, Coleshill petty sessional division, Meriden union, Birmingham county court district, rural deanery of Coleshill, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Cuthbert, standing on a knoll adjoining the village, is a handsome edifice in the Early English style, erected in the reign of Edward II. and consists of chancel and nave, and an embattled western tower with lofty spire, containing 5 bells: the church was thoroughly restored in 1872-3, by the late R. F. T. Croxall esq. of Shustoke House, at a cost of about £3,000, in memory of his wife, when the chancel and south porch were rebuilt, the interior reseated with open oak benches, the chancel repaved, an organ introduced, a new pulpit of Caen stone and marble erected, and a new east window inserted at the cost of the inhabitants: on the 1st of June, 1886, a disastrous fire caused by lightning destroyed the roof and the whole of the interior fittings, the only ancient monument which escaped destruction being an altar tomb to Sir William Dugdale kt. M.A. Garter King of Arms, who died at Blyth Hall 10 Feb. 1686, and was buried here: the church was thoroughly restored in 1887 at a cost of £6,034 under the direction of Messrs. Bodley and Garner, architects, of London: the new pulpit was given by Miss Ellery; the font by Mrs. and Miss Dugdale, the oak lectern by Mrs. S. Dugdale, the stained east window by Mrs. Croxall and the organ by Mrs. Croxall and Miss Ellery: there are also memorial windows to the late R. F.T. Croxall esq. and two placed in the chancel in 1895: the church affords 230 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Bentley annexed; average tithe rent-charge £222, gross' yearly value £272, net £140, including 3 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Thomas Whitehead M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The rectory was given by William de Clinton, then lord of the manor, in the 17th of Edward III. to the priory of Maxstoke: Lord Leigh is the lay impropriator. Abutting on the churchyard are six almshouses, which, with a Free school, were endowed with certain lands in the parish by Thomas Huntbach esq. of this place, who died in 1712, and is buried in the churchyard. The Birmingham Corporation have extensive water works near Whitacre junction, erected in 1872. Shustoke House is the seat of Mrs, Croxall. There is a good trout stream near to the Griffin, inn. William Francis Stratford Dugdale esq. of Merevale Hall, who is lord of the manor, and E. R. T. Croxall esq. of Aldridge, are the principal landowners. The soil is gravel; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the civil parish is 1,947 acres; rateable value, £11,587 8s.; the population in 1891 was 417.
