Historical Description

Solihull is situated 109 miles from London, near the western extremity of the county, and is remarkable only for its handsome church, and having once had a market. Near the village, on the right of our road, is Malvern-Hall, the seat of H. G. Lewis, Esq.

SOLIHULL is a small town, pleasantly standing on the road to Warwick, and an extensive parish, the head of a petty sessional division, union and county court district, with a station on the Oxford, Leamington and Birmingham section of the Great Western railway, 122 miles from London, 14 ¾ north-west from Warwick and 7 south-east from Birmingham, in the Northern division of the county, Solihull division of the hundred of Hemlingford, rural deanery of Solihull, archdeaconry of Birmingham and diocese of Worcester. The town is lighted with gas by a Limited Company, and supplied with water from wells. The church of St. Alphege is a large cruciform structure of sandstone, consisting of chancel with north chapel, nave, aisles, transepts, north porch, and a central embattled tower, with spire, 213 feet in height, and containing a clock and 10 bells; the west end of the nave and the south aisle are Late Perpendicular; the rest of the church and the lower part of the tower are Decorated work of an early and curious character: north of the chancel is the small chapel of St. Alphege, and beneath it a plainly but beautifully groined crypt, containing an ancient stone altar; at the east end of the south aisle is the chapel of St. Anton, with altar piece and piscina. In the north aisle is the Beckett chapel, with piscina, and the chapel of St. Mary, with piscina in the south transept is now used as choir vestry and is divided from the tower by an oak screen. St. Catherine’s chapel is in the north transept. In the south wall of the chancel is an aumbry; the belfry storey of the tower is Perpendicular, and the spire modern; the chancel retains a piscina under a richly canopied niche, and there is a plainer one in the vestry; the whole of the windows in the chancel are filled with stained glass; the church was restored in 1879 a cost of £3,576; and further in 1887-8, at a cost of £644; there are 920 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge, £1,465, average £1,086, net yearly value, £1,000, including 91 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late T. Walker esq. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Thomas Beedle Harvey Brooks M.A. of University College, Oxford. Of former rectors of this place may be mentioned John Feckenham D.D. (alias Howman), so called from his birthplace, Feckenham Forest, in Worcestershire, a noted personage in the religious disturbances during the reigns of Mary and Elizabeth; he was for ten years rector here, and afterwards Dean of St. Paul’s and Abbot of Westminster, being the last mitred abbot who sat in the House of Peers; he died a prisoner in Wisbech Castle in 1585. There is an excellent church house in Drury Lane, licensed for divine worship, and available for general parochial purposes. The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Augustine of England, has been much enlarged and beautified and a new presbytery and mission school erected. There is also a Congregational chapel, with sittings for 500 persons. The Public Hall, a structure of red brick, with stone facings, was erected by private enterprise in 1876, at a cost of £2,500 and will seat 300 persons. A Masonic Lodge is held on the first Wednesday in each month, at the George Hotel. There is also an association for the Prosecution of Felons. The hospital for infectious diseases at Lyndon End was opened in 1876. The Convalescent Home, Lower Knowle road, was erected by subscription, for twelve poor children, and is under the superintendence of a committee of ladies. Malvern Hall is a mansion in the Early Italian style, with wings, added about 100 years ago; it is approached by iron gates, with stone pillars, erected in 1811 from an old design of Inigo Jones, and stands in a park of more than 150 acres; it is at present vacant. Berry Hall, a noble mansion of Classic character, is the residence of Joseph Gillott esq. The Rev. John Couchman M.A. rector of Thornby, who is lord of the manor, William Charles Alston esq. J.P. of Elmdon Hall, the trustees of the late John Francis Greswolde-Williams esq. (d. 1892), and Henry Harvey Chattock esq. with Mrs. Wykeham Martin, of Leeds Castle, near Maidstone, Kent, are the principal landowners. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, loamy. Chief crops, wheat, barley and oats; area, 11,939 acres; rateable value, £52,144; the population in 1891 was 6,150, including 100 officers and inmates in the workhouse.

Petty Sessions are held in the Public Hall, Solihull, the first Tuesday in each month, at 11.0 a.m. & at the Public Hall, Acocks Green, the second & fourth Tuesday in each month at 11.15 a.m. The places in the petty sessional division are:-Baddesley Clinton, Balsall, Barston, Elmdon, Hampton-in-Arden, Knowle, Lyndon quarter, Sheldon, Solihull & Yardley.

The union of Solihull includes the following places:-Baddesley Clinton, Balsall, Barston, Bushwood, Elmdon, Knowle, Lapworth, Nuthurst, Packwood, Solihull, Tanworth & Yardley(Worcester). The area is 46,331 acres; rateable value in 1895, £196,072; population in 1891, 29,822.

Schools

Grammar, originally founded by Richard II. & re-organised by the Charity Commissioners in 1879: the endowment amounts to about £350 per annum; attached to the school are 5 elementary scholarships of £9 each & 5 foundation scholarships of £7 each; two exhibitions of £30 each per annum, tenable at any place of higher education, & various prizes: there are 120 boys, & new buildings have been erected at a cost of £7,000; the school is controlled by a body of 15 governors; headmaster, The Rev. Robert Wilson M.A., LL.D, of Trinity College, Dublin; & 5 assistant masters.

Public Elementary Schools, aided by endowment, for girls & infants; average attendance, 75 girls; Miss Sarah Loud, mistress; Miss Sarah Ravenhill, infants’ mistress.

Public Elementary School (boys), built in 1891, at an estimated cost of £2,500, for 250 boys; average attendance, 90.

School, Bentley Heath (mixed), for 50 children; average attendance 37; licensed for Divine workship which is held every Sunday afternoon at 3.0 p.m.
