Historical Description
SPERNALL, in Domesday “Spernore,” is a parish 3 ½ miles north from Alcester and 2 north-east from Coughton station on the Evesham and Ashchurch branch of the Midland railway, pleasantly seated on the banks of the river Arrow, in the South-Western division of the county, Alcester division of Barlichway hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Alcester, rural deanery of Alcester and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The village consists only of a few straggling houses. The church of St. Leonard, originally a chapel to Coughton and partly rebuilt in 1844, is a small building of stone, consisting of chancel, re-erected in a modern form of the Norman style, nave, south porch used as a vestry, and a western turret of Decorated character containing one bell; one of the windows on the north side contains a few fragments of ancient stained glass; at the north-east angle of the nave is a small stone pulpit, and a lectern of oak; the font consists of a cup-like basin on a shaft: the chancel is small, being only 13 feet by 10 feet 4 inches: in the east wall is a circular wheel window in six compartments: there are several monuments in the chancel to members of the Chambers family of Studley, patrons of the living (1802-47): the church, affords 116 sittings. The register dates from March 25th, 1562. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £126, gross yearly value £155, net £140, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1843 by the Rev. Charles Dolben M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford, who is also rural dean of Alcester and rector of Ipsley where he resides; the Rev. Samuel Peshall M.A. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford, has been curate in charge since 1888. The Rev. Joha Chambers left by will, dated May 3rd, 1832, £50 to be applied to the education of poor children; John Saunders, in 1709, left £10, the interest to be given yearly to the poor; the Rev. Thomas Allen, formerly rector here, left by will in 1727, a yearly rent charge of 10s. on his real estate at Great Alne; Ann Batt, in 1806, left £20, the interest yearly to be given to the poor of the parish. Sir Nicholas William George Throckmorton bart. of Buckland, Faringdon, Berks, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is marl; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, beans and turnips. The area is 1,065 acres; rateable value, £938; the population in 1891 was 70.
