Historical Description

STOKE is a parish, forming an eastern suburb of the city of Coventry, outside the municipal boundary, but under the provisions of the “Boundary Act, 1868,” is included within the parliamentary borough of Coventry, in the North-Eastern division of the county, Kirby division of Knightlow hundred, Coventry petty sessional division and county court district, Foleshill union, rural deanery of Baginton, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The Toads from Coventry to Hinckley and Lutterworth, as well as the Coventry canal, pass through the parish. The church of St. Michael, erected in the 13th century, is an ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower, containing 3 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to Harriet Anne, daughter of the lata Michael Sadler esq. M.P. and wife of the Rev. Canon Henry Temple M.A. rector of Oswaldkirk, Yorks; she died 25 Dec. 1862; the memorial tablets include one to the Rev. Joseph Harwar D.D. a native of Stoke, and 16 years president of Magdalen College, Oxford, who died 15th July, 1772: the church affords 560 sittings, of which 422 are free. The register was in 1892 comprised in 14 vols. and dates from the year 1574, but is deficient, in some parts illegible, and in bad condition. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £67, net yearly value £162, with 23 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Thomas Allen Blyth D.D. of Queen’s College, Oxford The impropriate tithes, amounting to about £64, are the property of William Pridmore esq. Here are Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels. Here was born, about 1471, William Hollis, son (according to some authorities) of Thomas Hollis, yeoman, of this place, but stated in the Diet. Nat. Biog. to have been the son of William Hollis, citizen and baker of London: having served his apprenticeship to a mercer in London, he was in 1511 chosen Warden, and in 1530 Master of the Mercers’ Company; in 1527 he served the office of Sheriff of London, and became Alderman of Aldgate Ward 31 Mar. 1528, from which ha was transferred to Bread street Ward, 27 August, 1534, and being elected Lord Mayor 13 October, 1539, served that office during 1540, and on 3 January, 1539-40, received the Princess Anne of Cleves, on her progress through the city previous to her marriage with Henry VIII.: he was the owner of Clement’s inn in the Strand, removed in the year 1892, and died in London 13 October, 1542: he was knighted in 1540; by his will, dated 1541, he left £200 for the building of a cross in Coventry, and through his second son William he was the ancestor of the Earls of Clare and Dukes of Newcastle of this family. There are two manors; the Corporation of Coventry are lords of the manor of Stoke, and the Drapers’ Company of Coventry are lords of the manor of Biggin. The principal landowners are Sir Richard Moon bart.; William Fk. Pridmore esq. of Wyken House; John Gulson esq.; Joshua Perkins esq.; Rev. Frederick Hancock B.A. rector of Selworthy, Taunton, Somerset; the Drapers’ Company of Coventry; Sir Thomas White’s trustees; the trustees of the Nuneaton Charity; Francis Alexander Newdigate esq. M.P.; Frederick Twist esq. of Coventry; Mrs. Bentley, of Ryton-on-Dunsmore. The parish contains about 64 parish gardens, enclosed from the common about 1824, and let at a nominal rent, and there is a common of 66 acres and a heath partly covered with gorse, but used for pasturing and as a cricket ground; Stoke Green, south of the heath, is available for the same purposes. The soil is heavy loam; subsoil, clay. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 936 acres; rateable value, £6,120; the population in 1891 was 1,739.
