Historical Description

STRETTON-ON-DUNSMORE, in Domesday “Stratone,” from its situation on the old Roman “street” or “fosse,” is a village and parish between the roads from Coventry to Dunchurch and Southam, 2 ½ miles south from Brandon and Wolston station on the Rugby and Coventry branch, and about 3 miles north-west from Dunchurch station on the Rugby and Leamington branch of the London and North Western railway, and 8 northeast from Leamington, in the South-Eastern division of the county, Rugby division of Knightlow hundred, Rugby petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Baginton, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The church of All Saints, erected in 1835, from designs by Rickman, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, and an embattled western tower with 4 pinnacles, containing a clock and 3 bells: there was anciently a chantry here, founded by Thomas de Wolvardynton, parson of Lavenham, in Leicestershire, in the time of Edward III.: the church affords sittings for 450 persons, 242 being free. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from 1695; burials, 1681. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £111, net yearly value £322, including 165 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Rev. Charles Simeon, and held since 1879 by the Rev. John Richardson M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, and rural dean of Baginton. The Rev. William Daniel, formerly vicar of the parish, left by will £4,000, subject to the life of his widow, for restoring the former church, the total cost, exclusive of proceedings in the Court of Chancery, probate and legacy duty and Acta of Parliament being £5,232 14s. 2d. The Duke of Buccleuch K.T. who is lord of the manor, William Molyneux Rose esq. of Wolston Grange, Rugby, and William George Peareth esq. of Thorpe Mandeville (who is lay rector) are the principal landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats, but a considerable quantity of land is pasturage. Including the hamlet of Princethorpe, the area is 2,822 acres; rateable value, £2,858; the population in 1881 was 978, of which 310 are in Princethorpe.
