Historical Description
Studley is a village situated on the river Arrow, and had once a castle belonging to J. Fitz-Carbution, by one of which family a priory of Augustine canons was brought hither in the reign of Henry II., from Wicton, in Worcestershire, where it was first founded; the site was granted to Sir Edmund Knightley, serjeant-at-law. Before the gate of the monastery there was an hospital for the relief and entertainment of poor infirm people founded by William Cantclupe, before the reign of Henry III.
STUDLEY, in Domesday “Stodlei,” is a considerable and very pretty village and parish, on the river Arrow and the road from Alcester to Birmingham, 1 mile west from Studley and Astwood Bank station on the Evesham and Ashchurch branch of the Midland railway, 15 miles south from Birmingham, 6 south-west from Henley-in-Arden, 4 north from Alcester, 3 south from Redditch, 9 south-east from Bromsgrove and 106 from London, in the South-Western division of the county, Alcester division of Barlichway hundred, Alcester petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Alcester, and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. Gas was introduced in 1865. The ecclesiastical history of Studley assumes more interesting proportions with the foundation of the Augustinian priory in Stephen’s reign, by Peter Corbicon, or de Stodley, possessing, amongst its other endowments, not only the church of the parish, but also those of Aston Cantlow and Coughton: it was suppressed 27th Henry VIII. and the site afterwards granted to Sir Edmund Knightley: the site of this monastic house is on the west bank of the Arrow, north-west of the church, and the few existing remains of the priory church, including a portion of the west window, sculptured heads and quatrefoils, a date, 1539, and other fragments, now form part of a farm house.
The church of St. Mary the Virgin, given to the canons of Studley on the foundation of the priory, is an edifice of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch, vestry and an embattled western tower of two stages, with angle buttresses and pinnacles, and containing 5 bells, all but the fourth, which is without date, having been cast in 1688: in the north wall is a somewhat richly-worked semicircular-headed doorway of the 12th century, belonging to the ancient Norman church: the south aisle has an Early English doorway, and a 15th century doorway on the south side, gives access to the chancel from without; three double-faced pointed arches separate the nave from the aisle, the eastern end of which had once a chantry altar, founded in (1405-6), by Thomas Middlemore, of Edgbaston: the east window was filled with stained glass in 1847 by the lay rector, Robert Knight esq. of Barrells, and another stained window was placed in the south aisle in 1874 in memory of T. Bolton esq.: some fragments of ancient glass remain in the north-west window: the church contains monuments to the families of Lyttelton (1729-1811), Dewes (1661-1747), Petre, Knottisford (1697), Chambers (1702-12), Handy (1803-12), and Holyoake (1635): and a brass to Mabel Augusta Jaffray, d. April 29th, 1886, presented by her mother; in the churchyard is a marble monument to the same lady, erected by her husband, William Jaffray esq.: the church was restored in 1888, and during the progress of the work, the stone steps to the rood-loft were discovered in the wall and also a stone carved with the Holy Lamb and flag: there are sittings for 500 persons. The register dates from the year 1663. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £25, average £18, net yearly value £134, including 11 acres of glebe, in the gift of Sir John Jaffray bart. and held since 1885 by the Rev. James Smith Turner. The Catholic church, erected in 1851-3, and dedicated to St. Mary, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel and nave, with a stained east window, and adjoining is a residence for the priest. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1872, and a Baptist chapel, built in 1847. A fair is held here on September 28th. The trade of the place depends almost exclusively on the manufacture of ordinary and sewing machine needles, bodkins, fishing-tackle and fish-hooks. The parish lands of 30 acres are now let to Henry Greves for £25 10s. yearly; and the old school-house to Mr. Hudson at £20, which sum is used for educational purposes; there are yearly rent-charges of £10 8s. left by William Featherstone; £1, left by Edmund Court; £9, left by Court Dews; £1, left by John Hobbins, of Great Alne; £29 5s. 2d. Consolidated Annuities, left by George Peters; a right of admission into Worcester infirmary, left by John Knottesford; and £152 10s. Consolidated Annuities, left by John James to provide Bibles for the poor; all the above have been consolidated under a new scheme by the Charity Commissioners, and are managed by trustees, three of whom are appointed for life, the others are the guardians of the parish, four appointed by the parish council, and the vicar, who is chairman; the trustees distribute the amounts, firstly, in a sum not exceeding £20 yearly, to the repairs of the church, secondly, in grants for educational purposes, and the remainder to the poor. This place, including the church and a mill, belonged, soon after the Domesday survey, to William, son of Corbicon, the earliest known member of a family, who, under the later names of Corbicon and Corbezon, had their principal seat here. Studley Castle, at present unoccupied, was erected in 1834, by Sir Francis Lyttelton Holyoake Goodricke bart. M.P. and is a building of native stone, in the Norman style, and comprises a centre and two wings, forming three sides of a quadrangle, the fourth being occupied by a dwarf turreted wall as a courtyard; it has a Gothic entrance and porteeochere, and contains a spacious hall, opening to a tower vestibule of considerable height, lighted by a lantern from the top, with recessed stained windows: the grand staircase has carved balustrades, and leads to a gallery round the octagon tower; this staircase, the floors, and doors to the hall and chief rooms are of polished oak; a lofty groined oak roof covers the dining hall, which is 45 feet by 30 feet, and the drawing room 50 feet by 25 feet, both exclusive of large bay windows; these rooms contain many choice works of art, and some of the finest examples of the modern school of painting, including chefs-d’oeuvres by Rosa Bonheur, Etty, Maclise, Heywood-Hardy and others; the library is an octagon, 25 feet over, and contains a valuable collection of ancient and modern works: a billiard room and a gun room were erected about 1883: small round towers, lighted with stained windows, form lobbies to extensive suites of apartments, the east wing being appropriated to those of the family, and the west wing to servants' offices, bachelors’ rooms &c.; the chief reception rooms open to a broad gravelled terrace, leading to the gardens and pleasure grounds, which are beautifully laid out, and occupy an area of 16 acres. The park has been much enlarged, and contains an artificial lake and several thriving plantations, and is bounded on the south by the river Arrow, and on the north by the Studley and Henley road. Captain Henry C. Cotton is lord of the manor and chief landowner, but there are several small proprietors. The soil is marl; subsoil, marl also. The chief crops are wheat and beans. The area is 4,083a. 1r. 20p.; rateable value, £9,436; the population in 1891 was 2,566.
