Historical Description
TYSOE, in Domesday “Tiheshoche,” (with Upper or Over Tysoe, Middle of Church Tysoe and Temple or Lower Tysoe), is a large village and parish on the Oxfordshire border of the county, 9 miles north-west from Banbury, 15 south-east from Warwick, 4 ½ south from Kineton station on the East and West Junction railway, and 81 from London, in the South-Eastern or Rugby division of the county, Kineton division of the Kineton hundred, Burton Dassett and Kington petty sessional division, Shipston-on-Stour union and county court district, rural deanery of South Kineton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, the oldest part of which dates from a period 200 years before the Conquest: it consists of chancel, nave, aisles, porch and a lofty embattled western tower with pinnacles and containing 6 bells: the church was restored in 1854 by the late Sir G. Gilbert Scott R.A. and was enlarged in 1872 by the addition of an organ chamber on the north side of the chancel, a stained east window being at the same time inserted; other stained windows have since been placed in the clerestory, the Old Testament saints occupying the north, and New Testament saints the south side; and in 1887 a window was erected in the south aisle to commemorate the jubilee of the ordination of the Rev. C. D. Francis M.A. late vicar: the font cover, of finely-carved oak, the brass communion rails and brass lectern were presented by Miss Robertson, the Rev. Ernest Thoyts M.A. curate here (1875-7) and now Canon of Inverness, Miss Bolton King and the Vicar, and the vestry screen by the Rev. C. D. Francis, late vicar: a new clock, with four dials and Cambridge chimes, has been set up at a cost of £200, defrayed partly by a grant from the feoffee estate and partly by voluntary contributions: cut in the hill-side, opposite the church, there was formerly the rude figure of a horse, believed to commemorate the gallantry of Richard Nevill, Earl of Warwick, at the battle of Towton Field, March 29th, 1461, but the figure 110 longer remains, although an imitation of it exists near the house called “Sunrising,” which many people mistake for the original figure: that it is not so is proved by the dissimilar dimensions and position of that mentioned by Dugdale: there are 380 sittings. The register dates from the year 1575. The living is a discharged vicarage, with the rectory of Compton-Wynyates annexed, average tithe rent-charge £156, joint net yearly value £300, including, at Tysoe, 130 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Northampton, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Francis Vivian Dodgson M.A. of New College, Oxford. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels here. The former is endowed with the interest of £100, bequeathed in 1857 by Mrs. Walton, who also left £400, in the hands of trustees for the maintenance of her own burial-place and that of her late husband, the residue to be annually divided at Christmas among the poor of Tysoe and Winderton. The Tysoe Insurance Society, established in 1857, has now (1895) upwards of 661 members, and a fund of £7,637, available for sickness and death. There is a penny bank and reading room and a branch lodge of the Society of Foresters established in 1846, and having now (1895) 108 members. The feoffee estate belonging to this parish comprises about 35 acres of land, with several cottages, the income of which is estimated at £150 yearly: in addition to the above are 18 acres of coal land awarded to the poor, and now let at a rental of about £12 4s. which is applied in purchasing coals for the poor; T. Middleton and W. Willington each left small legacies, the former the interest of £20 and the latter £2 yearly: there is also £3 10s. for the poor, paid out of Westcot farm, and the like sum out of Edge Hill farm. The Marquess of Northampton’s clothing club, carried on for the benefit of the inhabitants, is managed by Mrs. Dodgson. The Marquess of Northampton, who is lord of the manor, Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford esq. C.B. of Batsford Park, Moreton-in-the-Marsh, Gloucestershire, Messrs. Thomas Herbert Middleton, William Gardner, Arthur E. Peach, of Leicester, Miss Mary E. Hopkins, of Brailes, the Rev. Sir William Henry Cope bart. of Bramshill Park, Hants, the trustees of the late W. B. Lowe esq. of Ettington, and Hewens Edmund Nicholls are the principal landowners. The lay rectors are Magdalen College, Oxford, Lord Willoughby de Broke and Joseph Garrett. There are 114 acres of land let out in allotments belonging to the Marquess of Northampton. The chief crops are wheat and beans, but the land in this neighbourhood is chiefly used for grazing, and is of the richest kind. The area is 4,710 acres; rateable value, £5,515; the population in 1891 was 910.
National School (mixed), built in 1856, together with a master’s house, after designs by the late Sir Gilbert Scott R.A. & enlarged in 1872, for about 250 scholars; average attendance, 157; the old school-room is now used as a village club-room & is furnished as a library & reading-room.
