Historical Description
ULLENHALL, in Domesday “Holedale,” and later, “Outenhall,” and Astley, hamlets of the parish of Wootton Wawen, were constituted a separate ecclesiastical parish, June 27, 1861. By an order of the Joint Committee of the County Councils of Warwick, Worcester and Gloucester, dated 22nd of May, 1895, and which came into operation on Sept. 29th 1895, a part of the hamlet of Aspley was transferred from the parish of Wootton Wawen and union of Stratford-on-Avon to the parish of Tanworth and union of Solihull; they are on the Worcestershire border, 2 miles north-west from Heneley-in-Arden, 10 northwest from Stratford-on-Avon, and 6 north-west from Bearley station on the Birmingham and Stratford section of the Great Western railway, in the South-Western division of the county, Barlichway hundred, Henley petty sessional division, Stratford-on-Avon union and county court district, rural deanery of Alcester, and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The chapel of St. Mary, dating from the 14th century, served formerly as the parish church, but is now used only as a mortuary chapel; it consists simply of a chancel and nave, and has few attractive features, save, perhaps a singular Decorated window in the south wall of three trefoiled lights, but destitute of any hood-moulding: there remain some fragments of ancient glass and encaustic tiles, and in the chancel are mural monuments to Francis Throckmorton, of Coughton Court esq. circ. 1553-8, and to Robert Knight, Earl of Catherlough, in the peerage of Ireland, d. 30 March, 1772: there are also monuments to this family in the church of Wootton Wawen, but the bodies of the persons mentioned, at first interred there, and subsequently in a mausoleum in Barrells Park, were eventually buried at Ullenhall: the modern parish church, situated near the village, and erected in 1875 by the Newton family, at a cost of £5,000, is an edifice of Bath and Campden stone, in the Decorated style, from designs by J. P. Seddon esq. of London, and consists of apsidal chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, north porch and a western tower with spire, containing 8 bells: there are 250 sittings, 100 being free. The register dates from the year 1840. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £61; net yearly value £66, with residence, erected in, 1875, in the gift of T. H. G. Newton esq. and held since 1879 by the Rev. Melbourne Russell West M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. The charities amount to about £75 a year. Barrells Hall, formerly the residence of the Earls of Catherlough, and now the seat of Thomas Henry Goodwin Newton esq. J.P. is in a well-wooded park of 400 acres. T. H. G. Newton esq. who is lord of the manor, George Frederick Muntz esq. of Umberslade, Hockley Heath, and the trustees of the late Rev. Henry Charles Knight M.A. of Malvern Wells, are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed, consisting of clay, gravel and marl; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley and pasturage. The area is 2,933a. 3r. 18p.; the population in 1891 was 508.
