Historical Description
The village of Wellesbourne Hastings, which had formerly a market and fair. On the right is the seat of Bernard Dewes, Esq.; and beyond is Chalcote, the seat of the Rev. John Lucy; Thomas Lucy, who built the house in the reign of Elizabeth, is said to have driven Shakspeare from the county for stealing his deer.
WELLESBOURNE HASTINGS and MOUNT-FORD, in Domesday “Waleborne,” form a very extensive parish, on the river Bourne, and on the road from Warwick to Kineton, 3 ½ miles north from Ettington station and 4 ½ north-west from Kineton station, both on the East and West Junction railway, 5 miles east from Stratford-upon-Avon and 6 south from Warwick, in the South-Western division of the county, Warwick division of the Kineton hundred, Stratford-upon-Avon union and county court district, Warwick petty sessional division, rural deanery of North Kineton and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester; it has evidently been a place of some importance, the families of Hastings and Mountford having been its feudal lords. The church of St. Peter, built by Henry de Newburgh, the first Earl of Warwick of the Norman line, and formerly belonging to the priory of Kenilworth, is a handsome edifice in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, some of which were brought from the convent of Trinitarian friars at Thelesford; the church was almost wholly rebuilt in the year 1847, at a cost of £4,000; nearly all the windows are memorials, one having been in the Exhibition of 1851: there is a very perfect brass on the floor of the chancel to the memory of Sir Thomas Le Strange, of the reign of Henry IV. and a modern brass to the late Sir John Mordaunt bart. who died in 1846: a reredos, sedilia and credence table of marble, designed by Mr. Wyatt, were erected in 1873, at the expense of his widow, to the memory of the Rev. Lord Charles Paulet, vicar of Wellesbourne from 1830, and prebendary of Salisbury 1833, who died 23 July, 1870: in the south aisle is a memorial window to Bernard Granville esq. of Wellesbourne Hall, d. 1868; the new organ was erected in 1885 at a cost of £400; in the north transept is a Norman arch, formerly at the entrance to the chancel, but removed in 1847; there are 500 sittings, 250 being free. The register, including Walton, dates from the year 1560. The living is a discharged vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £273, net yearly value £320, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Charles John Eliot M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. A gas and coke company was established here in 1864, capital £2,000, in 1,000 shares of £2 each.
In the reign of Edward I. a charter was granted for a weekly market to be held here, as well as a two days' yearly fair; these have long since been discontinued, but the place still retains marks of antiquity. Sir Charles Mordaunt bart. of Walton Hall, who is lord of the manor, and Miss Lucy are the principal landowners. The soil is various, principally sandy loam; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans' and turnips. The area, including Walton, is 2,953 acres; rateable value, £4,166; the population in 1891 was 672,including Walton, which contains 222.
Walton, a hamlet of this parish, but constituted an ecclesiastical parish in 1842.
