Historical Description
WHITCHURCH, in Domesday “Witecerce,” is a parish about 4 miles south-south-east from Stratford-upon-Avon, which is the nearest railway station, in the South-Western division of the county, Kineton division of Kineton hundred, Stratford and Snitterfield petty sessional division, Stratford-upon-Avon union and county court district, rural deanery of North Kineton and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Mary is a simple building of stone, consisting of chancel and nave, south porch and western turret containing 1 bell: in the chancel is a slab, with inscription, to the memory of the wife of Sir Thomas Overbury, nephew of Sir Thomas Overbury who was poisoned in the Tower of London, 15th September, 1613, by the connivance of Robert Carr, Earl of Somerset, and his countess: there are also memorials to Margaret Smith, d. 1795: Rev. George Smith, d. 1780; Elizabeth Smith, d. 1786; John Ayshcombe, d. 1754; Mercy, his wife, d. 1795 and John, their only son, d. 1811; the chancel was restored in 1890, at a cost of £557, and the church now affords 200 sittings. The registers of baptisms and burials date from the year 1561; marriages, 1562. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £213, net yearly value £230, including 81 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of J. R. West esq. and held since 1882 by the Rev. Arthur Beal M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There are two charities of £100 each, founded by John and Ann Ayshcombe, the interest of which is expended annually in the purchase of bread for the poor of the parish and of clothing for poor resident widows and widowers. James Roberts-West esq. of Alscot Park, Preston-on-Stour, is lord of the manor and owner of the soil. The soil is various; subsoil, principally gravel. The chief crops are wheat and beans. The area is 1,987, of which 527 acres, called Crimscote Field, are unenclosed; rateable value, £1,873; the population in 1891 was 194.
