Historical Description

WILLEY, in Domesday “Welei,” and in Henry II.’s time “Wilega,” is a small village and parish on the Watling Street road and the Leicecstershire border, 8 miles north from Rugby, 3 west from Lutterworth and about 2 south from Ullesthorpe station on the Leicester and Rugby branch of the Midland railway, in the Scuth Eastern division of the county, Kirby division of Knightlow hundred, Rugby petty sessional division, Lutterworth union and county court district, rural deanery of Rugby, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Leonard is a small and ancient building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, vestry and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: in the chancel is a marble tablet to the Rev. Robert Beresford Podmore, formerly vicar of Monks Kirby, who died in 1842, and was buried in the chancel: the interior of the church was repaired and re-pewed in 1678 and 1839, and in 1866 the chancel was reseated with open benches: in 1884-5 the church was almost rebuilt, at a cost of upwards of £1,500, defrayed by the Rev. F. M. Payler M.A. late rector, the chancel and vestry being entirely new: there are 110 sittings. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1662: burials, 1621. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £395, net £300, including 177 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. F. P. Morgan Payler M.A. of Heene, Worthing, Sussex, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Edward Henry Price M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Earl of Denbigh is lord of the manor. Lord Camoys, the Patron, Samuel Eales esq. and John Goodacre esq. are chief landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley and oats. The, area is 758 acres; rateable value, £1,196; the population in 1891 was 133.
