Historical Description
WORMLEIGHTON, in Domesday “Wimerstone,” and at a later period written “Wimelestone,” “Wilmelathtune,” and “Wylmelechtone,” is a small village and parish, near the road from Southam to Banbury, and on the borders of Northamptonshire, 1 ½ miles north-east from Fenny Compton station, on the Great Western and East and West Junction railways, 97 ½ by rail from London and 7 south-east from Southam, in the South-Eastern division of the county, Burton Dassett division of Kineton hundred, Southam petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dassett Magna, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The Oxford canal runs through the parish. The church of St. Peter, given to the canons of Kenilworth by Geoffrey de Clinton, is an ancient structure of Edgehill stone, probably of Norman origin, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower of early date, containing 3 bells; the church has been partially renovated, and a stained window inserted in the south aisle in memory of the Rev. Robert Maynard, formerly vicar of this parish; there are other stained windows, including one in the chancel, presented by Arthur Harvey Thursby J.P. Mary Ann Thursby, and their children; in the chancel is a monument with quartered shields of arms, to John, son and heir of Sir Robert Spencer, first Lord Spencer, of Wormleighton, who died at Blois, in France, 6 Aug. 1610, aged 19, and a curious memorial to “An,” wife of Thomas Barford, ob. 19 May, 1686: close to the communion rails is a round stone, with an inscription stating that underneath lie the bowels of Robert, Lord Spencer: the alleys of the nave and aisles are paved with ancient tiles, bearing the arms of the Botelers of Oversley and Wemme, and a word, assumed to be “Gawen,” possibly for “Gawen Boteler,” who died at the age of 17 in 1289, and whose younger and only surviving brother was summoned to Parliament from 1296, as Baron Boteler; tiles of the same pattern have been found at Fenny Compton and Stoneleigh Abbey: a lofty and elaborately traceried screen of carved oak, taken, it is generally believed, from the old Spencer mansion, where it is supposed to have formed part of a musicians’ gallery, divides the chancel (which is on a considerably higher level) from the nave: there are sittings for 192 persons, 98 being free. The register dates from the year 1586, but is imperfect from 1649-59. The living is a discharged vicarage, tithe rent-charge, £40; net yearly value £113, including 40 acres of glebe with residence, in the gift of Earl Spencer, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Robert Edward Baynes M.A. of New College, Oxford. Earl Spencer K.G., P.O. is lord of the manor and sole landowner. This lordship was held in the Conqueror’s time by the Earl of Mellent, and soon after belonged to Geoffrey de Clinton; it subsequently passed through the families of Walsh, Pecke, and Montford, to William Cope, who sold it, 22 Henry VII. to Sir John Spencer; the latter built a magnificent mansion here in the reign of Henry VIII. of which considerable remains still exist: he also rebuilt or considerably repaired the church, and rebuilt the village, and dying, 14th April, 1522, was buried at Brington, Northamptonshire; of this family may also be noticed Sir John Spencer, grandson of the preceding, representative in Parliament for Northamptonshire, 1553 and 1570, and sheriff of that county in 5 Edward VI. (1551-2), he died 8th November, 1586; Alice. Spencer, daughter of the foregoing, who was wife of Ferdinando, 5th Earl of Derby, and afterwards of Lord Chancellor Ellesmere; in 1602, while residing at Harefield, Middlesex, she was visited by Queen Elizabeth, and died there 1636. Sir Robert Spencer, first Lord Spencer of Wormleighton, and sheriff of Northamptonshire in the 43rd Elizabeth, opposed with spirit and determination, in the reign of James I. the arbitrary principles of the Government, and supported popular privileges; he died 25th October, 1627; Henry Spencer, third Lord Spencer and first Earl of Sunderland, whose wife Lady Dorothy Sydney is celebrated by Waller as “Saccharissa,” was during the civil war a devoted adherent to the royal cause, and serving as a volunteer in the ranks of the King’s horse, fell gloriously at the battle of Newbury, 1643. Robert, second Earl of Sunderland K.G. the crafty and unscrupulous minister of Charles II. James II. and William III. became Lord Chamberlain in 1697, and died at Althorp, 28th September, 1702. Charles, third Earl K.G. was also a distinguished statesman, a principal secretary of state in the reigns of Queen Anne and George I. and lord lieutenant of Ireland; he died 10th April, 1722. The Manor House, erected by Sir John Spencer, seems to have been a place of great size and importance, and is said to have extended round a quadrangle, but during the Civil. Was most of the buildings were destroyed by fire; the portions still remaining consist of the gate-house, and part of the south side of the mansion: the gate-house is of stone, and consists of three blocks, a centre archway with a room over it, a gabled building on the west side, and on the other a square tower of four storeys, with a plain parapet, low pyramidal roof and vane.: it contains a curious old contemporary clock, striking the hours, but without any dial; over the archway, on the outer or south front, are the royal arms, and on either side, in panels, the rose and the thistle, and the date 1613: on the inner front, the central position is occupied by the Spencer arms, with the motto “Dieu defend le Droit;” the portion of the house still remaining stands north-east of the gate-house, and is an embattled structure of two storeys, divided by buttresses, and originally lighted by mullioned and transomed windows of four lights, most of which are now blocked; the principal room on the ground floor is about 30 by 20 feet, and has a bay window at the end; the rooms above are also spacious; the house is now in the occupation of Mr. Fabling, who, however, only uses a part of it. Another historical family, that of Washington, is also connected with the village. A branch of the family of George Washington lived at Wormleighton, and the name appears in the parish register as early as 1595. The village includes a number of remarkably fine model cottages built by the late and present Earls Spencer for their tenantry. The soil is heavy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and beans, with a considerable portion of pasture. The area is 2,407 acres, rateable value, £3,192; the population in 1891 was 238.
National School (mixed), for 60 children; average attendance, 35; the school has an endowment of £600 Consols, producing annually £20, & left by Mrs. Catherine Arnold in 1839.
