Historical Description
The village of Wroxall, where was a priory of Benedictine nuns, founded by Hugh de Hatton, in the reign of Henry I. or Stephen. It was granted by Henry VIII. to Robert Burgoyne and John Sendamore.
WROXALL, anciently “Wrocheshale,” is a parish on the road from Warwick to Birmingham, 3 miles north from Hatton station on the Great Western railway, 6 northwest from Warwick and 14 south from Birmingham, in the South-Western division of the county, Snitterfield division of Barlichway hundred and Warwick petty sessional division, union and county court district. The priory of Wroxall was founded about 1141 by Hugh de Hatton, for nuns of the order of St. Benedict, and dedicated in honour of St. Leonard: it was subsequently enriched by the piety of many other benefactors, and at the Dissolution was valued at £72 15s. 6d. Agnes Little, the last prioress, being allowed a yearly pension of £7 10s. od.: on the 8th December, 1554, the site and buildings were granted by the Crown to Robert Burgoyne and John Scudamore, and shortly afterwards a house was built here by the Burgoynes, the southern and eastern sides of the nunnery being adapted to domestic uses, and the west front rebuilt: the famous architect, Sir Christopher Wren, purchased the estate in 1713 and occasionally resided here: his descendants sold it to the late James Dugdale esq. who built here a splendid Tudor mansion: it is now occupied by James Broughton Dugdale esq. M.A., D.L., J.P. No parish church appears ever to have been founded at Wroxall, because, the whole lordship being granted to the priory, the tenants would naturally attend the services of the conventual church, which has, since the Reformation, supplied the absence of any such foundation, being at the same time the absolute property of the holders of the estate. The present church of St. Leonards, which occupied the north side of the conventual enclosure, and was rebuilt about 1315, is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel and nave under one continuous open timber roof, undivided by any chancel arch, and is lighted on the north side by fine Decorated windows, by two windows on the south side, where it adjoins other buildings, and at the east end by a large window of five lights in the florid style of the 15th century: originally the church seems to have had 110 tower, or one detached: the present embattled western tower is of brick, probably of the 16th or perhaps the 17th century, with a porch door on its north side, and contains 3 bells, one with an invocation to the Virgin, and another dated 1664: the windows on the north side and others retain some interesting remains of the 14th century stained glass, intermixed with modern, work, and there are various mural monuments to the families of Burgoyne and Wren, notably one to Christopher Wren and Mary his wife, dated 1773, and another to Diana Anna Burgoyne, 1693: there are 100 sittings. The portions of the priory still remaining are the church, chapter house, refectory and connecting walls and offices: the singularly constructed garden walls are attributed to Sir Christopher Wren. The registers, unbound and imperfect, begin at 1586: there is also a book with the names of the churchwardens and parish officers from 1670 to 1730. The living is a peculiar donative, in the gift of James Broughton Dugdale esq.: the Rev. Henry George Willacy M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and headmaster of the King’9 school, Warwick, has been chaplain since 1883. The parish possesses charity lands with a gross annual income of about £117, which after paying expenses and deducting certain allowances, furnishes £40 for the education of poor children, £10 towards their clothing, given at Christmas, £20 for the distribution of coal at the same season, and a balance to aid the necessitous to pay their rent, provide medical attendance etc. The ancient stocks still remain close to the schools, and are in good preservation. James Broughton Dugdale esq. is the lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is various; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and beans. The area is 1,651 arcres; rateable value, £1,977; the population in 1891 was 167. By a Local Government Order which came into operation March 25, 1886, a detached part of this township was amalgamated with Rowington and another portion with Beausale in the parish of Hatton.
School (mixed), with house for mistress, erected in 1863, by the late James Dugdale esq. for 100 children; average attendance, 49.
