Historical Description
The little village of Askham, situated on the banks of the river Lowther, which, in this part of its course, runs along a deep rocky channel, overhung with trees and thickets; a stratum of bastard marble appearing at the bottom, above which is a rock of red freestone.
Askham Hall is a small but neat and well situated old house, the property and residence of Edward Bolton, Esq. with a small deer park adjoining. From Askham a road leads to Pooley Bridge, at the lower end of Ullswater, a lake situated partly in this county and partly in Cumberland. This sheet of water, which is in the form of an S, is nine miles in extent, and above a mile in breadth. In viewing this lake from an eminence, we discern all its bays, shores, and promontories, and in the extensive landscape take in a variety of objects, thrown together with all that beauty, which wood and water, lawns, rising sweeps of corn, villas, villages, and cots, surmounted by immense mountain's and rude cliffs, can form to the eye. The country to the right, for many miles, is variegated in the finest manner, by inclosures, woods, and villas, among which Graystock, Dacre, and Delmain, are seen, whilst to the left nothing but stupendous mountains and rude projecting rocks present themselves, vying with each other for grandeur and eminence.
ASKHAM is a parish and pleasant village on the west or left bank of the river Lowther, 5 miles south from Penrith and 2 south-west from Clifton stations on the London and North Western and North Eastern railways, 3 east from Pooley Bridge, 13 ½ west-north-west from Appleby and 23 north from Kendal, in the Northern division of the county, West Ward union and petty sessional division, county court district of Penrith, rural deanery of Lowther and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. A stone bridge over the Lowther, connecting the parishes of Lowther and Askham, was erected in 1897, at the expense of the Westmorland County Council. The church of St. Columba, rebuilt in 1832 by William, 1st Earl of Lonsdale K. G. stands in a hollow at the foot of the village, and is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, north transept and an embattled western tower, containing one bell; there are 308 sittings. The registers date from 1566, but are deficient from 1624 to 1627. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £185, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Lonsdale, and held since 1904 by the Rev. John Alfred Kitchin. Built to the wall of the vicarage house is a stone inscribed PAX HUIC DOMUI 16 H 36 L. M. Charities: —In 1813 a subscription appears to have been made, which amounted to £420, and of this £300 was applied in purchasing land with which the school is endowed: Sandford's charity of £8 a year, founded in 1724 by William Sandford esq. of Askham Hall, includes £3 for church purposes and £5 for distribution in money to the poor. Askham Hall, the ancient manor house and now serving as the rectory house of the parish of Lowther, stands on an eminence on the left bank of the river, and consists of a long rectangular peel tower, standing east and west at the south-east angle of a courtyard, the latter measuring about 84 feet from north to south and 64 from east to west, and Tanges of later buildings, which surround the courtyard on the east, north and west: the tower or defensive portion is 78 feet long by 34 wide, and three storeys in height, but was modernized in the 17th century, and the facade now presents the aspect rather of a country mansion than a fortress; but it retains its embattled parapet and has crenellated turrets at the angles, projected on corbels from the main wall: is was probably built towards the end of the 15th century, and is therefore of later date and less rudely designed than other peel towers in this locality, and the walls are about 6 feet in thickness: the ground floor, divided by a thick partition into two unequal portions, comprised originally a fine hall, 44 feet by 23 feet, and adjoining it on the west a lofty revaulted chamber, about 21 by 16 feet, with a newel staircase at the north-west angle leading to the rooms above; the main entrance is now on the south front, bnt was formerly at the back; it opens into an entrance hall, formed out of part of the great hall and containing a massive oak staircase; the remaining portion has been converted into a dining-room: the west and north sides of the courtyard are enclosed by buildings of two storeys, with a gateway on the west, and were begun to be erected in 1574 by Thomas Sandford esq. who married Anne, daughter of Cuthbert Hutton: over the gateway is a sunk panel, containing a shield quartering the arms of Sandford, Crackenthorpe, Lancaster and English, and surmounted by helmet, crest and mantling: underneath is an inscription, and on either side the arch are the initials T. S. and A. S.; these buildings also display other coats, including over the entrance to the dining-room a cartouche shield within scrolls, bearing a fess dancettee between three boars’ heads, erased in chief, and two lions rampant in base, and in the kitchen a tablet with two shields and a lion passant: extending from the north side of the peel tower is a long range of buildings inclosing the east side of the court, and including a transverse block, which comprises on the west a parlour and on the east what is now a dairy, but was once the chapel of St. Mary; its interior dimensions ire approximately 25 by 14 feet; the south doorway remains, and some windows appear to have been removed and inserted in the wall next the gateway: the piscina was discovered at the beginning of the present century, and still remains in situ: this mansion was the seat of the Sandford family from 1375 to 1680; it is now the rectory house for Lowther, and is occupied by the Rev. Thomas Beaufort Tylecote B. A. rector of Lowther. At Askham Fell are traces of a Roman road traversed by the 10th Iter of Antoninus. The Earl of Lonsdale, who is lord of the manor, William Bowman esq. and John S. Branthwaite esq. are the chief landowners. The cultivated soil is loam resting on limestone. The chief crops are hay, oats, turnips and potatoes. The area is 4,471 acres of land, of which only 3,297 are enclosed, the remainder being common and wood lands and 19 of water; rateable value, £3,351; the population in 1901 was 513.
Public Elementary School (mixed), built in 1779 & endowed in 1813 by Mrs. Jane Bowman & Mr. William Noble; the endowment, derived from about 5a. 3p. of land, now (1906) produces £12 yearly; the school will hold 120 children; average attendance, 110; William Bamber, master; Miss Edith Robinson, mistress.
