Historical Description

Bampton, a small village, remarkable only for its situation in a fine vale, and the free-school there, where some very eminent men are said to have received the rudiments of their education. —The number of scholars is generally about 70; and the master’s salary, which arises chiefly from tithes amounts to about 60l. a year, besides presents from the parents of his pupils.

At High Knipe, in this parish, was born Thomas Gibson, M. D. physician general to the army, and author of "A System of Anatomy," who married to his second wife, a daughter of Richard Cromwell the protector; and, in the year 1669, his nephew, Edmund Gibson, D. D. bishop of Lincoln and London, was likewise born at the same place. He had the honour of publishing a new translation of Camden’s Britannia, with considerable additions and improvements in successive editions. He was educated at the above-mentioned free-school, which was founded, in the year 1623, by Thomas Sutton, another native, under Mr. Jackson (who held it forty-four years), and admitted, in the year 1686, a member of Queen’s College, Oxford. He began his literary career with publishing, in 1691, "Drummond’s Polemo-Middiana," and James the Fifth of Scotland’s "Cantilena Rustica," and, in 1692, the Saxon Chronicle, and the Catalogue of the Tenison and Dugdale MSS. In the year 1693 a correct edition of Quintilian; and, in 1694, when he proceeded M. A, Somner’s Roman Posts and Forts in Kent, and his Portus Juius illuitratus. In 1695 he entered into orders, and published, with the assistance of his friends, a new translation of the Britannia, with a dedication to Lord Somers, who offered him a living of 200l. a year, in the Isle of Thanet, which he declined on account of health. In the year 1696 he was admitted library-keeper, at Lambeth, to Archbishop Tenison, who took him into his family, and, in 1697 he was appointed morning preacher at Lambeth, and prefixed to the "Catologus Manuscriptorium in Anglia et Hibernia," a Latin life of Bodley, and history of his library. In 1698 he punished "The Posthumous Work of Sir Henry Spelman, with his Life," and was appointed domestic chaplain to the archbishop, and lecturer of St. Martin's-the-Fields. He distinguished himself in defence of the archbishop’s rights as president of the convocation, and had the degree of D. D. conferred on him by the archbishop, in the year 1702, was preferred to the rectory of Lambeth, to the preceptorship and a residentiary's place in the church of Chichester, and in the year 1710, to the archdeaconry of Surrey. In 1713 he published his "Codex juris Anglicani," and, in 1716, was promoted to the see of Lincoln, and, in 1723, translated to London. His close application to study and business of various kinds brought on a decay, which terminated his life at Bath, on the 6th of September, 1748, in the 79th year of his age, having lived to publish a second edition of the Britannia, enlarged to two volumes, 1722. He was interred at Fulham, with no other inscription over him than: "Edmund Gibson, Lord Bishop of London."

About two miles to the southwest of Bampton is the beautiful lake of Haws-water, the approach to which is very picturesque; we pass between two high ridges of mountains, the valley finely spread with inclosures.—The lake is a small one, it being only three miles long, in some places half a mile over, and in others a quarter. It is almost divided in the middle by a promontory of inclosures, so that it may be said to consist of two sheets of water.— The upper end of it is quite enclosed with bold, steep, craggy rock, and mountains; and in the centre of the end, are a few little enclosures at their feet, waving upwards in a very beautiful manner. On the south side of the lake is a noble ridge of mountains, very bold and prominent down to the water’s edge, bulging out in the centre in a fine pendant broad head, that is venerably magnificent. This, with the view of the first sheet of the lake, losing itself in the second, among hills, rocks, and woods, is truly picturesque. The opposite shore consists of inclosures rising one above another, and crowned with craggy rock, "Descending into the vale of Mardale (says Mr. Housman), from the opposite side, the mountains before us open to a great depth, and discover the beautiful lake Haws-water, shining at their base, with the little fields and sequestered cottages along the margin of the lake. Here cataracts accompany us all the way to the bottom, and others appear at a little distance pushing over rocky ledges.—On the left Harterfell towers its lofty head, and shews a dark-coloured and almost naked perpendicular rock in front; but between the different layers are narrow sloping patches of scanty herbage, whereon the hardy mountain sheep find a bare subsistence, and in some places appear as if stuck to the wall of a huge and immensely high castle. Beyond this rocky eminence, High-street rears its bulky form; and in the same quarter, but more northerly, Kidsty-pike shews its conical head.—On the right, Naddle Forest appears less formidable, presenting a surface more soft and verdant, though bestrewed with rocky fragments."Near the base of the hill, two streams are seen rushing down the mountains on the left; from two elevated lakes, situated on the breasts of the hills, the the least of which is said to cover about ten acres." A dreary desert-like vale now conducts us, together with the united streams of these numerous cataracts, near a mile farther, when we turn a rocky hill to the left, and presently reach the little chapel of Mardale, overhung with mournful yews. The beauty and fertility of the vale gradually increase; and alter passing some huge fragments of rocks, broken and tumbled from the surrounding mountains, and scattered in the rudest order, we reach the head of the lake. The road soon approaches, and generally continues along its margin, sometimes in winding lanes, with high hedges on each side, which frequently shut out the view of the lake; then opening again, admit a full prospect of its beauties.—On the opposite side a ridge of mountains, forming Naddle Forest, rises quickly from the water’s edge, and hardly leaves room for a cultivated farm; its front displays a mixture of green herbage, grey rocks, and scattered trees. There are some small farms, with pretty fields and hedgerows of hazel and thorn, creeping gently up the sides of rocky mountains; while the beautiful sheet of water contrasts its soft and gently-heaving bosom with the rugged aspect of its grizzly guardians."As we proceed, alow promontory pushes into the lake, and almost separates its waters. This delightful promontory is nearly divided into small inclosures."Wellow-crag, a huge naked rock, rears its head on the southern shore, and overlooks the vale of Mar-dale. On this side the hills rise more gradually, and expose a mixture of grey rocks and soft greea surface. Here also Thwaiteforce tumbles down among the rocks in a fine and noble cataract."We continue along the winding borders of this sweet lake, and find the beauty of its vicinity in creasing. The fronts of Naddle Forest and Melkside, on the east, are clothed with wood to their very summits, and sometimes a tree, which the great height apparently diminishes to a shrub, is seen proudly overtopping the whole.

This lake is supposed to be about fifty fathoms deep in the narrowest part. The soil in its vicinity is dry and gravelly. A few neat small farms, almost buried in groves of trees, intervene between the western border and the rising hills behind. Char, perch, trout, eel, skelly, bass, chubb, and cheven, are caught in this lake."

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BAMPTON is a large parish and village, pleasantly seated in a valley, surrounded by lofty and Tugged mountains, near the confluence of the river Lowther with Hawes Water beck, a stream that flows from the beautiful lake of that name, and on the western side of these rivers, while on the east is the neighbouring village of Bampton Grange. Both villages are 4 ½ miles north-west from Shap station on the London and North Western railway, 9 ½ south from Penrith, 8 south-east from Pooley Bridge, about 2 north-east from Hawes Water lake and 20 north from Kendal, in the Northern division of the county, West Ward petty sessional division and union, county court district of Penrith, rural deanery of Lowther and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. Patrick, at Bampton Grange, is an edifice of stone, erected in 1726, on the site of the earlier structure, and consisting of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: in the interior are six marble monuments, including one to Edmund Gibson and Jane his wife, parents of Edmund Gibson, Bishop of London (1723-48), who was born at High Knipe, in this parish: the church was restored in 1885 at a cost of £2,023, and affords 250 sittings. The registers date from the year 1638. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, with residence and 74 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Lonsdale, and held since 1883 by the Rev. George Edward Foden Day L. Th. of Durham University. Adjoining the church, on the site of the old Grammar school, stands a new parish room, built by Miss Noble, of Beckfoot, and used as a Sunday school. There is also a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1877. A fair is held on the 25th of September, and on the second Monday after Michaelmas, for sheep and cattle. Hawes Water lake is in Thornthwaite manor, in the vale of Mardale, which is partly in this and partly in the adjoining parish of Shap (for description see Mardale). Charities: Walker and Denny’s charities, consisting of about g acres of land, afford £14 a year for educational purposes; Bray and Noble's charity of £6 a year, arising from about 3 acres of land, is also for education; the Poor’s stock &c. of £5 yearly is distributed in money; Tinclar's gift of £2 10s. yearly is for the vicar; Lord Wharton’s charity, founded by Philip, 4th Baron Wharton, d. 1695, provides 6 bibles and 6 prayer books, all of which are distributed in October. In this parish are several ancient halls, more or less modernized, and now serving as farmhouses: Bampton Hall, one of these, has been so altered as to be hardly worthy of notice: Knipe Hall, which stands near the river, is a building of the 16th century, consisting of two blocks, each two storeys in height, placed at right angles to each other, and lighted by long mullioned windows: Thornthwaite Hall, once a residence of the Curwen family, is a mansion of Elizabethan character: the Earl of Lonsdale is the present owner of these halls. In the parish is an octangular rampart, with a cairn in the centre. The Earl of Lonsdale, who is lord of the manor, Miss Noble, Miss E. Noble, Mrs. Stacey and Mrs. Orford are the principal landowners. The soil in the valleys is rich loam, very fertile, and the subsoil is limestone and gravel. The principal crops are hay and corn. The area is 10,705 acres of land, of which about 8,000 is uncultivated mountainous moorland, and 221 of water; rateable value, £4,284; the population in 1901 was 452 in the civil and 430 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Riggindale, or Riggendale, is a deep glen, partly in this and partly in Shap parish, bordered by High Street mountain and Kidstey pike.
