Historical Description

Barton, a small village, having a free-school, founded in the year 1649, by the learned Dr. Gerard Langbaine, provost of Queen’s College, Oxford, a native, as was also Dr. William Lancaster, another provost and benefactor to this school.

Eamont Bridge, a township in this parish, is situated at the northern extremity of the county, over the river Eamont; a little to the west of the bridge is a large round entrenchment, inclosing a plain area, which has two passages opposite to each other, and is called King Arthur’s Round Table. The trenches are on the inside, which shew it not to have been designed for a place of strength, but rather a sort of amphitheatre for jousts and tournaments. Near it is a stone fort, in the form of a horseshoe, opening towards the table, called King Arthur’s Castle; it is also named Mayburgh, or Maybrough, which, in the Saxon tongue, signifies the fort of union or alliance, a name which it is supposed to have derived from a peace concluded here in the year 926, between Athelstan, king of England, Constantine, king of Scotland, Hawal, king of Wales, and other princes.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BARTON is an extensive parish, 5 miles from Penrith station on the London and North Western and Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith railways, 10 miles from Appleby and 30 from Kendal, in the Northern division of the county, West Ward petty sessional division and union, county court district of Penrith, rural deanery of Penrith West and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The parish is divided from Cumberland by Ullswater lake and the river Eamont, which flows from it to the east, and is one of the most interesting and picturesque regions in the lake district. The church of St. Michael, which stands about half a mile west of Sockbridge, is an ancient edifice of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, with chapel on the south side, aisles, south porch, and a central tower supported towards the nave by two heavy arches, one above the other: in the church are two brasses to the Dawes family, of Barton Kirke; one of these is to Frances Dawes, ob. 1673, and has an epitaph of eight lines, in rhyming couplets: the church was restored in 1904 at a cost of £2,000, when a new oak roof was provided and the interior reseated in oak: it now affords 400 sittings. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £156, with 75 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Lonsdale, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Thomas Sharp, of St. Bees. The present glebe house, as appears by an inscription over the door, was erected in 1637 by Lancelot Dawes D. D. vicar here 1608-53. Sanderson’s bequest of £100 for educational purposes brings in £2 19s. yearly; Nicholson’s charity of £1 yearly is distributed at Easter; Dudley’s charity of about £109 in Consols, produces £2 19s. 8d. yearly for distribution in money; Ramsay’s charity of £100 in the Mersey Dock stock, produces £3 16s. yearly; Denison’s charity of £20 produces 10s. yearly; all these benefactions, except Sahderson’s, are distributed on St. Thomas’s day. On Divock Moor is a star-shaped raise or barrow, and on its western side four upright stones placed in a straight line, near one of which, in 1881, an urn was found, containing ashes and burnt bones, beneath a heap of stones; on the same moor, and not far distant, is another and similar raise, examined at the same time and found to contain a cist about 4ft. long by 14in. wide, formed of several stones and covered with two slabs; the cist, placed east-west, inclosed portions of a skeleton: this moor has been much used at remote periods for sepulchral purposes, but the cairns in which the deposits were made have in several instances been rifled of their contents: the most prominent memorial is a monolith called “The Kopstone;” it is about 6ft. in height and stands on the south side of a stone-paved circle, about 68ft. in diameter; to the north-west is a smaller circle, 18ft. in diameter, and formed of stones about 3ft. high, which had also been a place of interment, and scattered about the locality are other circles and cairns. Barton Kirk Hall, now a farmhouse, was once the residence of the Dawes family, who in fact erected the greater part of the mansion and occupied it until the beginning of the last century, when it was transferred to the Hasells, and is now the property of John Edward Hasell esq. J. P., D. L. of Dalemain: the house, portions of which may date from the latter part of the 15th century, consists of the original fabric and a long wing added to it in 1628 by Dr. Lancelot Dawes, and thus incloses two sides of a courtyard: the older part, which contained a dining hall, 36 by 18 feet, but now partitioned, is three storeys in height and has good stone mullioned windows and a stair turret: the added wing comprises a large hall, with a lofty porch, erected in 1693 by Thomas Dawes, nephew of Dr. L. Dawes; over the porch is a tablet bearing the initials of both, the dates already quoted, and the motto “non est haec reqvies;” in the rear are farm buildings: at the south end of the upper floor of the older portion of the house is the original withdrawing room, 20 by 19 feet, which has mullioned windows, and once had a richly decorated plaster ceiling of Geometrical design, much enriched with foliage and flowers and divided by a beam into two compartments, but now (1906) destroyed; the cornice and a frieze of arabesques are still in fair condition: in the western wing is a fine oak-panelled room. Kirkbarrow Hall, a small house of the Tudor period, and now a farmhouse, has a porch with a room over it and a niche on the outside; the hall has been thoroughly modernised, but many of the old doors, rudely fashioned with an axe, still remain. A Roman road runs through this parish. John Edward Hasell esq. of Dalemain, on the opposite side of the river, who is lord of the manor, Geoffrey T. M. C. Cowper esq. of Carleton Hall, and Paxton William Parkin esq. of Skarrow Bay, Penrith, are the chief landowners. The soil is gravel; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are oats and some land in pasture. The area is 2,458 acres of land and 339 of water; rateable value, £3,398; the population in 1901 was 285.
