Historical Description

BEETHAM, in Domesday “Biedun,” is a parish, township and village, 2 ½ miles south-west from Milnthorpe station on the London and North Western railway, from Sandside station on the Furness railway and 3 north-west from Burton-in-Kendal, in the Southern division of the county, Kendal Ward petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Kirkby Lonsdale, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle. The river Beetha, or Bela, flows through the parish and is crossed by a stone bridge of three arches, and the parish is also intersected by the Kendal and Lancaster canal. There is fishing in the rivers Kent and Beetha, in which trout are fairly numerous. The church of St. Michael, originally of the Early Norman period, is an edifice of stone, now partly in mixed styles of Gothic, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the nave has an arcade of three Gothic arches on the north side and four Norman arches on the south, the latter having round and the former octagonal piers: the south doorway is Early Norman, and the lower part of the tower is reputed to be of Saxon date: the windows at the west end contain portions of stained glass formerly in the clerestory; these include some figures of kings and bishops, and probably date from the 15th century: the stained east window of five lights is a memorial to the Rev. William Hutton M. A. vicar 1844-81; in the Beetham chapel is another to George Crowle Wilson esq. and there is one at the west end to John Yeats Thexton esq. of Ashton House: the font, inclosed in a casing of carved oak, bears the date 1636: the pulpit is also of carved oak: in the chancel is an altar tomb, adorned with shields of arms and bearing mutilated recumbent effigies of Sir Robert Myddleton and his wife Ann, daughter of Roger de Betham; the figure of the knight is in armour, while that of his wife is enwrapped in a shroud: in 1834 a number of coins of William I. and Edward the Confessor were discovered within a block of ashlar at the base of a column in the nave: the church has been restored since 1873, at a cost of £5,233, and affords 400 sittings. The registers date from the year 1608. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £195, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle, and held since 1904 by the Rev. John Ormandy Crosse, of Durham University. In 1905 the old Grammar school building was purchased by Mrs. Frith-Hudson and opened as a reading room. About 1 ½ miles south-west of the village, on the summit of a limestone crag, is a beautiful pine wood, at the end of which delightful views are obtained, and here also is an interesting spot known as “the Fairy Steps,” the geological conformation of the rocks being such as to present a flight of narrow and precipitous steps in a fissure of the crag; during the summer months this place is visited by a great number of people. Near the village is a paper mill, and there is also a corn mill. Near the school house once stood an ancient chapel dedicated to St. John, and on this spot human remains have often been exhumed. Charities: J. Burrow’s and Wilson’s charities produce about £ 1 19s. a year for bread; J. Hutton’s of about £37, the poor's stock and Wilson’s of £4 5s. each, Hilton’s of £1 and R. Burrow’s and L. Hutton’s, together of £4 8s. are all for distribution in money. Beetham House, the residence of Mrs. Hutton, is a mansion occupying a pleasant site on the east bank of the Beetha. Ashton House is the residence of Charles Frith-Hudson esq. J. P. Temple Bank, a smaller house on an eminence overlooking the river, is at present (1906) unoccupied. Beetham Hall, now a farmhouse in the occupation of Mr. John Crayston Webster, is a building of stone of the Late Decorated and Jacobean periods, and consists of two blocks of buildings, at right angles to each other, standing on rising ground to the south of the village, and formerly enclosed by a fortified wall, extending northwards; only parts of this, however, are now standing, around a large courtyard about 70 yards long by 45 wide; the wall is rather over three feet in thickness, and is pierced at unequal distances by narrow slits or openings, splayed within, and together with the parapet defending the alure or walk on the top, but now incomplete, is in height about 15 feet: the earlier portion of the house, standing on the east and part of the south side of the courtyard, comprises on the east side what was originally the great hall, an apartment about 40 by 25 feet, lighted by traceried windows, now partially blocked, and at the north-east and south-west angles are stair turrets: the roof is modern, and the place now serves as a barn: at the south end, and at right angles, running west and forming part of the south wing, is the kitchen, measuring nearly 37 by 19 feet, and beyond it, but separated by a passage-way, is a tower, originally of four storeys: the ground floor retains a fireplace, and the chamber above, once a domestic chapel, has good windows and a piscina: the other rooms over the kitchen and chapel were reached by a mural stair, but are now without floors and roofless: the remaining portion of this wing forms the present residence and has a good oak staircase: over the porch are the initials “T. M. B.” and over a window is the date 1693, where it is supposed the front door formerly stood: in the kitchen is an oak cupboard, also bearing the initials “T. M. B.” and the date 1694: in a field adjoining the house is a huge block of granite, altogether foreign to the neighbourhood, and so situated as to excite much curiosity, but how it got there is altogether unknown. The manor belonged to or was held in the 13th century by a family who settled here, and, adopting the name of the place, called themselves “de Betham,” and some members of the family appear to have been knighted: the manor, with others, was granted by Henry VII. to the Stanleys, of whom Thomas, 2nd Baron Stanley, and Sir William Stanley had, by deserting the banner of Richard III. practically decided the battle of Bosworth Field (21st August, 1485) in favour of Henry: the estates afterwards came into the hands of the Cliffords, Barons Clifford of Chudleigh, and in 1767 were sold by, Hugh, 5th baron, to Daniel Wilson esq. of Dallam Tower, and are now the property of Sir Maurice Bromley-Wilson bt. of Dallam Tower, who is also lord of the manor. A court leet and court baron, with view of frankpledge, is held annually. Sir Maurice Bromley-Wilson bt. and Mrs. Charles Frith-Hudson are the chief landowners. The area is 3,954 acres of land, 14 of inland and 34 of tidal water and 180 of foreshore; rateable value, £6,760; the population in 1901 was 619 in the civil and 566 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Public Elementary School, founded in 1663 & endowed with tithes & 27 acres of land & about £460 in Consols, producing together £32 yearly; the school house, built in 1905, will hold 120 children; average attendance, 65; the school is managed by a body of 6 trustees; John William Pattynson, master.
