Historical Description

GRASMERE is a parish and township and includes also the township of Rydal-and-Loughrigg, Langdale and part of Ambleside; the village is delightfully situated in a fertile vale at the north end or head of the lake, from which it has its name, and is 8 ½ miles north-west from Windermere station on the London and North Western railway, 8 north from Coniston Lake station on the Furness railway, 4 north-west from Ambleside, 12 South from Keswick and 17 north-west from Kendal, in the Northern division of the county, Kendal ward and union, petty sessional division and county court district of Ambleside, rural deanery of Ambleside, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle.

The “Local Government Act, 1858” (21 and 22 Viet, c. 98), was adopted here 23 April, 1872, the district consisting of parts of Grasmere and Rydal-and-Loughrigg, but under the provisions of the Act of 1894, the parish is now governed by an Urban District Council of g members. By an order of the Westmorland County Council, confirmed by Local Government Order No. 26,832, dated March 31, 1891, the area of the Urban District was extended to correspond with the civil parish of Grasmere. The parish comprises one of the most picturesque and beautiful districts in the region of the lakes, in which it holds a central situation. The lakes of Grasmere and Rydal, the tarns of Elter-water, Easedale, Loughrigg, Codale, Blea and Stickle, the rivers Brathay and Rothay, the waterfalls of Stock Ghyll, Dungeon Ghyll, Sour Milk Ghyll and Tongue Ghyll, the mountains of Fairfield and Langdale Pikes, are all within its limits; and on the south-west corner is Wrynnse, upon the summit of which the counties of Westmorland, Cumberland and Lancaster form a junction, which is marked by three shire stones. The church of St. Oswald is an ancient and massive building of stone, dating from the nth century, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, erected in the 13th century, and a low embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells: in the church is a mural monument of marble, with medallion portrait and epitaph, by John Keble, erected to the memory of Wordsworth by public subscription; in 1893, two stained windows were placed in the church as memorials to the Rev. Canon Olivier and to the wife of Major Olivier, and one in 1896 to the Rev. E. Jefferies, a former rector: the organ was erected in 1872: the church affords 490 sittings. In the churchyard is the grave of the poet Wordsworth, who, after 1803, resided for some time in Grasmere and died at Rydal Mount, 23 April, 1850, and also of his wife Mary (Hutchinson); here also are interred his sister Dorothy and his daughter Dora (Mrs. Quillinan), and close by is the grave of Hartley Coleridge, biographer and poet, and eldest son of the distinguished poet, S. T. Coleridge, who died at Rydal, 6 Jan. 1849. The register dates from the year 1573. The living is a rectory, average net yearly value £196, including 6 acres of glebe and residence, rebuilt in 1896 at a cost of £1,300, in the gift of Stanley Hughes Le Fleming esq. of Rydal Hall, and held since 1903 by the Rev. John Henry Heywood M. A. of University College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1878, with 150 sittings. A cemetery of about one acre was formed in 1894 at an estimated cost of £1,000, and is under the control of the Urban District Council, acting as a burial board. The Assembly Rooms, opened in 1903, contain a large hall for public meetings, balls, concerts and entertainments, and capable of seating 400 persons. The Grasmere Reading Room, erected by the lata Miss Agar, of Silver How, has a large billiard room and a reading room well supplied with daily and weekly papers, magazines &c.; the members’ subscription is 4s. yearly or 1s. 2d. per quarter; visitors are admitted upon payment of 6d. per week: the institution is managed by a committee of 7 members. The Grasmere and Lake District athletic sports are held here annually, under the patronage of almost the whole of the county gentry, on the Thursday nearest the 20th August, and comprise various north-country amusements, for which valuable prizes are offered. The poor’s money of £1 10s. and Holme’s and Water’s charities, together £6 yearly, are distributed in money.

Grasmere Lake is situated about a quarter of a mile south of the village, and though small, being only a mile long by about half a mile wide, is one of the most famous, as it is one of the most impressive, of the whole series of lakes, and at an earlier period, when the valley was but little frequented by tourists and no houses broke the repose of its mountain-girt shores, the effect was still more marked and striking; now, owing to its central position in the Lake District, not less than the attractiveness of its scenery, Grasmere has become a favourite place of residence, and during the season is the head quarters of large numbers of tourists, and the shores of the lake and its immediate environs are dotted with mansions, villas, hotels and smaller houses for the reception of visitors. The locality abounds in fine scenery: to the north and tending westward is Easedale, and at its head, about 3 ½ miles north-west, is Easedale Tarn, where a boat is kept and fishing may be had: a little to the west, on High Raise (2,383 ft. ) is Codale Tarn, from which a stream flows into Easedale Tarn, and near the head of the latter its waters, falling over a rocky ledge, form the cascade known as Sour Milk Ghyll: the Easedale Beck, flowing through the valley, joins the Raise Beck near Forest Side, and the united streams passing through Grasmere are discharged into the lake close by the hotel: the most striking of the mountains on the north is Helm Crag, the rocky summit of which has been imagined to assume various fanciful outlines, some of which have been noticed by Wordsworth; to the east of this eminence is Tongue Ghyll, where there is a fine though not lofty waterfall, descending into a wooded chasm; further north lies Griesdale Pass and the tarn of the same name: Greenhead Ghyll, about half a mile north-east, is traversed by a stream falling into the united becks near the Swan inn, and between this and the village lies Butharlyp How, a wooded hill, round the foot of which is a pathway affording a charming walk. Grasmere lake is connected with Rydal Water by the river Rothay, which, re-emerging from the latter, eventually joins the Brathay above Windermere: to the west of Grasmere is Great Langdale, the Langdale Pikes with Stickle Tarn, a lonely lakelet, at the head of the ravine and the Langdale Beck; to the south is the small lake of Elterwater, through which flows the Brathay, and Loughrigg Fell with its tarn surrounded by grassy slopes and thickly-wooded banks. The famous “Wishing Gate” lies on the middle road between the lakes of Grasmere and Rydal; the rustic u moss-grown bar” of the poet has disappeared, but its more modern substitute abundantly testifies to the vitality of the tradition: the best view of Grasmere lake is obtained from Red Bank, an eminence at its foot; a steep road leads to its summit, the view from which is at once grand and extensive and embraces the chief peaks of the Cumberland mountains. In the parish, which is traversed by a Roman road, are megalithic remains in the form of a circle. The principal hotels here are the Prince of Wales’ Lake hotel, the Rothay hotel and the Grasmere Temperance hotel; there are likewise good houses for apartments. The cattle and sheep fair formerly held here on the first Tuesday in September has now fallen into disuse. In the township are several gentlemen’s seats, commanding fine views. The Earl of Lonsdale is lord of the manor; the principal landowners are the Manchester Corporation, Mrs. James Green, Robert Jackson Partridge esq. Edmond Brownhill esq. Mrs. James Gillbanks and Frank Maude Taylor Jones-Balme esq. of High Close. The soil is sandy; subsoil, rock and gravel. The land is chiefly in pasture.
