Historical Description
GRAYRIGG is a township, village and parish, on the road from Kendal to Kirkby Stephen, with a station 2 miles south-east on the London and North-Western railway, and is 5 ¼ miles north-east from Kendal, in the Southern division of the county, Kendal ward, petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Kendal, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle. The townships of Grayrigg, Whinfell, Lambrigg, Docker and also Dillicar, constitute the parish of Grayrigg. The church of St. John, rebuilt in 1837, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, rebuilt in 1869, and containing one bell: the church affords 420 sittings. The registers of baptisms, marriages and burials date from 1757; the earlier ones are kept at Kendal parish church. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £260, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Kendal, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Frederick Alexander Dwyer. There is a meeting-house for the Friends, built in 1871. Thompson’s charity provides £11 11s. yearly for education; the poor's stock and Stephenson’s gift, amounting together to £9 a year, are for the poor; Richardson’s charity (1836), Yaire’s (1850) and Todd’s (1863) together afford £14 4s. for bread; Lambert’s benefaction of £14 14s. yearly is for the support of the girls’ school; Rowlandson’s of £11 17s. 4d. a year, founded (1867) for educational purposes, is applied to the support of the school; the parish clerk receives £2 13s. 4d. a year from Richardson’s charity. Near the vicarage is a row of sir alms louses, built and endowed in 1868 by Miss Rowlandson and her brothers; each house has an endowment of 6s. per week. Old Grayrigg Hall, an embattled structure which stood on a site to the south of the present hall, now a farmhouse, was pulled down at the beginning of the present century. The manor was once held by the de Lancasters, Barons Lancaster, of Kendal, and afterwards by the Windsor and Duckett families. The Earl of Lonsdale, who is lord of the manor, Arthur Shepherd esq. of Shaw End, Patton, John Brunskill Farrer esq. of Lambrigg, and William Thompson esq. D. L., J. P. of Moresdale Hall, are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, sammel. The chief crops are oats, turnips and potatoes. The area of the township is 3,743 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £3,675; the population in 1901 was 204 in the township and 705 in the parish.
Endowed School for Boys & Girls, founded in 1723 & having an endowment of about £49 10s. Yearly, derived from £420 in stock & certain land in the parish; the boys’ school will hold 70 children; average attendance, 43; George Grime, master; the girls’ school will hold 60; average attendance, 44 Railway Station, John Hayes, station master.
