Historical Description
Hincaster, a township in Heversham parish, is where the Romans had a camp, within the park of Kirk's-head, mentioned by Camden as a place frequented by the Romans; nothing of late belonging to that people hare been discovered at either place. Levans Hall, to the north of Hincaster, was the seat of a family of that name for many ages: then of Redman for several descents; afterwards it came to the Bellinghams, and Adam, or his son James, gave it the present form in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, and in taste of carving in wood attempted to outdo his contemporary Walter Strickland, Esq. of Sizergh: after Bellingham it came to Colonel Graham, and from his daughter by marriage, to the ancestor of the late noble possessor, the Earl of Suffolk. The gardens belonging to this seat are in the old style, and are very curious; they are said to have been planted by the gardiner of James the Second who resided here with Colonel Graham during some part of the troubles of his royal master.
HEVERSHAM is a parish and village, in the Southern division of the county, Kendal ward, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Kirkby Lonsdale, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle. The villag& is on the east bank of the river Kent, on the road from Kendal to Milnthorpe, with a station about a quarter of a mile south on the Grange and Kendal branch of the Furness railway, and is also 2 miles north-west from Milnthorpe station on the London and North Western railway and 6 ¼ south from Kendal. By Local Government Board Order No. 34,951, 1 Oct. 1896, Heversham and Milnthorpe were formed into two civil parishes from the ancient civil parish of Heversham with Milnthorpe. The ecclesiastical parish includes parts of the town-ships of Hincaster, Levens and Preston Richard. The church, dedication unknown, partially rebuilt after a fire, originating through the carelessness of a plumber, I July, 1601, and again in 1869-70, is an edifice of stone, originally Norman, but now chiefly in the Perpendicular style, with some Transitional remains, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, the Levens and Dallam Tower chapels, south porch, and an embattled western tower with high pitched roof and containing 6 bells, presented by the Misses Woods, of Elm Lawn: the tower, previously Norman in its lower part, was taken down in 1869-70, and rebuilt in the Early English style at the sole cost of Mrs. Argles, of Eversley: the north arcade, rudely repaired after the fire above-mentioned, was also rebuilt at the same time. The reredos of alabaster was presented by Mrs. Harrison, of Woodhouse, and there are eight stained windows: in the church are monuments to the Bellingham and Preston families, and one to Colonel Fulke Greville Howard (formerly Upton), d. 4 March, 1846: since 1871 the chancel has been reseated and a new organ provided: it affords 450 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1601; marriages and burials, 1605; but for several years are exceedingly fragmentary. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £500, derived from 650 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Master and Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge, who are the impropriators, and held since 1866 by the Rev. Thomas Morrell Gilbert M. A. late Fellow of Trinity College, hon. canon of Carlisle, rural dean of Kirkby Lonsdale, Pluralities Act Commissioner for the archdeaconry, and surrogate. Charities: —The charities for the poor of the ancient parish now (1906) include about £52 a year from the Grammar School funds, £35 from the Woodhouse estate, and £11 from Johnson’s charity; Gibson’s charity provides £2 a year for apprenticing, and Johnson’s a guinea for a sermon on the subject of charity, on the first Sunday in the year; the organist receives about £11 10s. yearly from Suart’s charity, founded by will in 1849, and about the same amount from Bindloss’s charity. Plumtree Hall, a modern mansion of stone, is the residence of Percy J. Hibbert esq. M. A., J. P. Eversley, a mansion surrounded by handsome pleasure grounds, is the residence of Thomas Atkinson Argles esq. M. A., D. L., J. P. Heversham Hall, which stands near the church and is now a farmhouse, was erected in the latter part of the 15th century, on the site of an earlier dwelling house, some portions of which still remain; the principal front, which is two storeys in height, and of some extent, faces an open court yard, and has pointed arched doorways and mullioned windows; the walls are unusually massive, and in some places quite 6 feet in thickness; the interior includes a dining hall, 30 by 27 feet, with an oak open timbered ceiling, and contains a fine dining table of Elizabethan date, about 14 feet long by 3 in width, with six baluster legs, and strong frame work; a light oak staircase of later date leads to the upper rooms. A stone hammer of the pre-Roman period has been found in the parish. The manor was once held by the Lancasters, barons of Kendal, and subsequently, through intermarriages, came into the possession of the Windesore and Duckett families; a portion belonging to St. Mary’s Abbey, York, was granted after the Dissolution to the family of Buskell. Sir Maurice Bromley-Wilson bt. of Dallam Tower, Beetham, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is limestone and sammell, with peat on the low-lying lands; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are oats, turnips and some land in pasture. The area of the township of Heversham is 1,629 acres of land, 16 of water, 9 of tidal water and 2 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,532; the population in 1901 was 339 in the township, and 601 in the ecclesiastical parish.
