Historical Description
ORMSIDE, formerly called “Ormshed” and “Ormes-head,” is a parish, divided into two conatablewicks, and contains the secluded villages of Great and Little Ormside. It is in the Northern division of the county, East Westmorland petty sessional division, union of the East ward, county court district of Appleby, rural deanery of Appleby and Kirkby Stephen, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. Great Ormside is pleasantly seated on the western banks of the river Eden, with a station the Midland railway, and is 3 ½ miles south-southeast from Appleby, 15 ½ east-north-east from Shap, 7 west from Brough and 17 ½ south-east from Penrith. The church of St. James, which stands on a considerable eminence, at one time fortified, was probably erected in the 11th century, and is an edifice of stone, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch, a chantry or private chapel belonging to the Tufton family on the north side of the nave, and a western tower, once of greater height, and containing 2 bells: there are several ancient gravestones, to one of which are affixed three brasses dated respectively 1620, 1652 and 1693, to Sir Christopher Pickering, five times high sheriff of Cumberland, and to members of the Hilton family: in the south wall of the chancel is a double piscina, and there is a credence and aumbries: in the north wall of the chancel is a hagioscope opening to the chantry: the church affords 100 sittings. The registers date from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £130, with 190 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle, and held since 1903 by the Rev. John Wharton M. A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1879, with 100 sittings.
Charities amounting to £1 16s. yearly are distributed in money. Ormside Hall, a small but ancient mansion of the 16th century and now a farmhouse, faces the church and forms three sides of a quadrangle: there are a number of arched stone passages, running in various directions, but the rooms have been very much modernised and now possess few features of interest. Breeks Hall, about 2 miles south, is another ancient mansion, now the residence of Mr. Anthony Barnes Atkinson, farmer. Lord Hothfield, who is lord of the manor, and Jacob Wakefield esq. of Kendal, are the chief landowners. The soil is red clay; the subsoil is a strong clay. The chief crops are oats, turnips and pasturage. The area is 2,696 acres of land and 22 of water; rateable value, £3,109; the population in 1901 was 171.
