Historical Description

WINDERMERE is a town and parish, in the Northern division of the county, Ambleside petty sessional division, Kendal ward and union, county court district of Ambleside, rural deanery of Ambleside, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle. The town, formerly known as “Birthwaite,” has a terminal station on a branch from Oxenholme of the London and North Western railway, and is 1 ½ miles from the lake, 4 miles south-west from Ambleside, 3 ½ east from Hawkshead (Lancs) on the opposite side of the lake, and about 7 ½ north-west from Kendal.

The Local Government Act, 1858 (21 and 22 Viet. c. 98) was adopted here 3 Nov. 1865; the district formerly consisted of part of the old township of Applethwaite, but under the provisions of the Act of 1894 the district was extended so as to include the whole of the old township of Applethwaite (except the two small portions of the lake), and was governed by an Urban District Council of 15 members. By an Order in Council, dated March 31, 1905, the Urban Districts of Windermere and Bowness in Windermere were amalgamated and the two places are now under the control of one Council of 18 members.

Under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894, " and by Local Government Board Order No. 31,578, the old parish of Windermere has been divided, part being added to Ambleside, part to the new parish of Bowiiess-on-Windermere, and the remainder forming the new parish of Windermere.

The church of St. Martin, the parish church of Windermere, is an ancient edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a western tower, partly rebuilt and heightened, and containing 8 bells. The east window of seven lights is filled with ancient stained glass, principally of the 15th century (c. 1480) brought from Cartmel priory about 1523, and afterwards patched with earlier fragments from other windows, now partly contained in the 7th light, and representing St. Stephen, St. Lawrence and two archbishops; the window is divided near the top by a transom, above which are representations of Our Saviour's entry into Jerusalem, the Resurrection, and the Virgin and Child, besides 21 shields of arms, including those of Cartmel priory and of the Tudor Princes of Wales; the lower portion of the window displays in the centre, partly filling three compartments, the scene of the Crucifixion, with SS. Mary and John; the remaining lights contain figures of St. Barbara, St. George and the Dragon, St. Catherine, and fragments of figures of saints and archbishops; at the base are six groups, representing the donors of the glass; two of these comrise (as appears from an inscription) John Plo, prior, and various canons of Cartmel; the rest consist, in three cases, of a knight and lady kneeling at a desk; the knights wear heraldic tabards, and two have been identified as representing Sir William Thornburgh, of Hampsfield Hall, and Elizabeth (Broughton) his wife, and Sir John Pennington, ob. 1512, and Joan (Eure) his wife; another appears to represent a knight of the Bardsley family; the fourth group is now missing. There are memorial windows to the Rev. Fletcher Fleming, of Rayrigg, and to the wife of W. H. Schneider esq. of Belsfield, and there is a stained window in the south aisle, placed by the rector in 1892; the walls are painted with questions, Scripture texts and comments relating to baptism and the Lord’s Supper, taken from a catechism by Robert Openshawe, vicar of Weymouth, Dorset, 1590, and noticed in the “Gent. Mag.” 1849, xxxii. new series, p. 586; on the west wall is a painting of the “Majesty,” and on the north side of the chancel are paintings of the “Adoration of the Magi,” and the “Entombment of Out Lord”; on the easternmost pier of the south arcade is an inscription in Latin, placed in 1629 by Christopher Philipson, jun. of Calgarth, in commemoration of the deliverance from the Gunpowder Plot, Nov. 5, 1605; in the church are memorials to the Philipson family, and in the churchyard lies interred Dr. Richard Watson, bishop of Llandaff 1782-1816, who died at Calgarth Park, 4 July, 1816. The church was restored in 1871-3, at a cost of £8,000, by Messrs. Paley and Austin, architects, of Lancaster, and will seat about 700 persons. The register dates from the year 1611. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £552, with residence at Bowness and 306 acres of glebe, in the gift of Stanley le Fleming esq. of Rydal Hall and held since 1904 by the Rev. Euston John Nurse M. A. of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. The rectory-house is ancient, and has a fine old porch.

The Carver Memorial Congregational church, on the old road to Bowness, was erected (with Sunday schools) in 1880, at a total cost of about £13,000, by the Carver family, in memory of the late Mr. William Carver, of Manchester, and of the Priory, Windermere; it is an edifice of native slate stone with freestone dressings in the Early English style, from designs by Mr. Robert Walker F. R. I. B. A. of Windermere, and has a tower with pinnacles and spirelet, an organ chamber and vestries, and will seat 450 persons: there is a house for the minister. The Congregational church, at Troutbeck Bridge, was erected in 1858, and affords 320 sittings. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1867. A cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1886 at a cost of £2,762 and has a mortuary chapel; it was formerly under the control of a burial board of 9 members, but since March, 1895, the Windermere Urban District Council has acted as the burial board, under sec. 62 of the “Local Government Act, 1894.” There is a branch here of the Lancaster Banking Co. Limited, and also one of the Bank of Liverpool Limited. The Windermere hotel is a fine and well-appointed building, commanding a delightful view of the magnificent scenery of the lake. Charities: Borwicke’s and Jackson’s charities now (1906) amount together to £24 9s. derived from land and invested money; of this sum one-third is available for the poor of Windermere: Dixon’s gift amounts to £2 15s. yearly, and of this sum one-third is for Windermere; Wilson and Parke’s charity produces £1 7s. 4d. yearly; and Brown’s charity provides £1 7s. 4d. for bread and a moiety of Williams’s charity amounting to £1 yearly is for distribution in money to the poor of Windermere.

The Priory is a fine mansion of stone, standing in its own grounds, on the road to Bowness, and overlooks the lake and mountain scenery, but is now (1906) unoccupied.

Ellery, now the residence of Mrs. Heywood (but from about 1807 the property and home of Prof. John Wilson the eminent critic, essayist and poet, better known as “Christopher North”), stands in an elevated position, with magnificent and very extensive grounds, surrounded by the Elleray Woods, and affording a splendid prospect of the mountain scenery at the head of the lake.

Calgarth Park is the residence of Major Christopher Godfrey Watson J. P.: the mansion is a fine edifice of stone, and stands in well wooded grounds overlooking the lake.

St. Catherine’s, the residence of the Earl of Bradford D. L. is a mansion of stone on the Troutbeck road, about 1 ½ miles from Windermere station, and stands in extensive grounds.

Windermere, the largest of the English lakes, was formerly entirely within the old township of Applethwaite, but (with the exception of two small portions in Bowness Bay and at Waterhead) is now entirely within the Windermere Urban District; it has an extreme length of 11 miles, its greatest breadth, which is at the upper reach, being about 1 mile, but the total circuit of its shores is said to be nearly 23 miles; on account of its length and curvature a general view is not obtainable, and towards the south, where it narrows considerably, its appearance is rather that of a river than a lake: from Bowness, whence the lake is viewed to great advantage, to its extreme south point, the banks and elevated ground on either side; are richly wooded, and the hills of no great height; but towards the north the heights of Loughrigg, Black Fell and Langdale Pikes impart to the scenery a sterner and grander aspect: the Rothay and Brathay streams, meeting a little south-west of Ambleside, fall into the head of the lake: on the north-east it receives the Troutbeck, on the west the Cunsey beck, flowing out of Esthwaite water; and the river Leven. flowing out of the foot of the lake, discharges its water by an estuary into Morecambe Bay: about the centre of the lake is Belle Isle, an island about three-quarters of a mile long, on which is a mansion, and a number of small islets, or “holms, ’’ diversify the surface at various points: there is good fishing for char, perch, pike and trout, and boats for excursions may be had at the lake hotels. At the foot of the lake is the Windermere (Lake side) station of the Furness railway, from which communication is maintained through Ulverston to Barrow, and via Cornforth, with Lancashire and the Midland counties; a ferry boat conveys carriages and passengers across the lake every few minutes, to and from a point near Bowness. The Right Hon. James Wm. Lowther P. C., M. P. is lord of the manor. The Rev. Hugh Fleming, Lady Kenyon-Slaney, Major Christopher Godfrey Watson J. P.
