Historical Description

The very pleasing Village of Box, situated in a most beautiful country, and containing several handsome houses, built of the white free-stone got in the parish.

BOX is a parish and large village, extending to the Somersetshire border, with a station on the Great Western railway, which here passes through a tunnel one mile and three quarters in length, 6 miles north-east from Bath, 8 south-west from Chippenham and 10 ¾ from London, in the North-Western division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Chippenham and county court district of Bath, and in the rural deanery of Chippenham and archdeaconry and diocese of Bristol. The Box brook flows through the parish. The church of St. Thomas a Becket, erected in 1200, is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and spire containing 5 bells: the east window is stained: the church was restored in 1713, and again in 1897 at a cost of £2,800: there are sittings for 50 ½ persons. The register dates from the year 1580. The living is a vicarage, net income £195, with residence, in the gift of Thomas Hyde esq. of Forest Row, Sussex, and held since 1896 by the Rev William White, of London University. There is a Free Methodist chapel at Box Hill, and a Wesleyan chapel in the village. A cemetery of about 1 ¼ acre was formed in 1858 and has a mortuary chapel; it is under the control of a Burial Board of 6 members. Here are extensive stone quarries, a tallow factory, and some brewing and malting are done. The charities amount to £409, arising from funds left in 1844. and 1861 by John Neat esq. and Mrs. Holworthy, and invested in £2 ¾ per Cent. Consols; the interest is divided on Christmas day amongst 20 old men and women who are parishioners and members of the Church of England. Ashley Manor is the residence of Col, George Wilbraham Northey D.L. J.P. The principal landowners are the Rev. Edward William Northey M.A. Woodcote House, Epsom, who is lord of the manor, Col. G. W. Northey, George Pargiter Fuller esq. of Neston Park, and Sir John P. Dickson-Poynder bart. M. P. of Hartham Park, Corsham. The soil is various; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,633 acres of land and 14 of water; rateable value, £17,219; the population in 1891 was 2,360 in the civil and 2,236 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 16,527, dated March 24, 1884, Ditteridge parish was added to Box for civil purposes.

A School Board of 5 members was formed May 23, 1871; J. Milsom, Box, hon. clerk to the board; John James Parsons, attendance officer.

National Schools (boys, girls & infants), with residence for mistress, erected at a cost of £2,700, for 400 children; average attendance, 116 boys, 132 girls & 107 infants.
