Historical Description

BRATTON is a parish for all purposes, formed in 1894, it having been an ecclesiastical parish since 1845, out of Westbury, and is situated among the downs on the road from Westbury to Devizes, 3 miles east-by-north from Westbury station on the Salisbury branch of the Great Western railway, in the Western division of the county, petty sessional division of Westbury, Westbury union and county court district, rural deanery of Wylye (Heytesbury portion), archdeaconry of Sarum and diocese of Salisbury. The new line of the Great Western Railway from Stert to Westbury Junction passes about half a mile north of the village. The church of St. James is of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, transepts, aisles, and an embattled western tower containing 4 bells: there are several stained windows: the church was restored, reseated and newly roofed in 1860, at a cost of about £900, from designs by Messrs. Scott and Wyatt, architects, and will seat 200 persons. The register dates from the year 1542. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, including 3 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Westbury, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Robt. Stephen Jacob, Theol. Assoc, of King’s College, London: the vicarage house was erected in 1863, at a cost of £1,600, on ground given by the Marquess of Bath. Here are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. The Public Hall, built in 1889, is used for concerts and meetings, and will seat 150 people. There is an iron foundry, where agricultural implements are manufactured. The Marquess of Bath, who is lord of the manor, and Charles N. P. Phipps esq. of Chalcot, are the principal landowners. The soil is good loam on green sand; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley, and there are numerous apple orchards. The area is 3,574 acres; rateable value, £3,495; the population in 1891 was 610.
