Historical Description

BREMILHAM (or Cowgate), formerly a parish, was, by an order which came into operation March 25, 1884, for civil purposes, apportioned between Brockenborongh, Foxley and St. Mary Westport; it is on the river Avon, 2 miles west-south-west from Malmesbury terminal station on a branch of the Great Western railway and 10 north-west from Chippenham, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Malmesbury, and in the rural deanery of Malmesbury and archdeaconry and diocese of Bristol. The church has been pulled down, but the ground is still used as a cemetery, and there is a small stone building used as a mortuary chapel. The inhabitants attend the church at Foxley. The register dates from the year 1790. The living is a rectory annexed to that of Foxley in 1893, joint net yearly value £280, in the gift of Lady Northwick, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Geo. Lewis Pitt B.A. of University College, Durham, who resides at Foxley. Capt. George Lindsay Holford R. V. O. of Weston Birt House, Gloucestershire, is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is brashy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots and grass. The area and rateable value of this place is included in Malmesbury and Foxley; the population in 1891 was 44.

The children of this place attend the school at Foxley.
