At Dinton, a small village, Edward Hyde, Lord Clarendon, was born.

DINTON is a parish and village, on the river Nadder, with a station on the main line of the London and South Western railway, 8 miles west from Salisbury, 5 ½ west from Wilton, and 92 from London by railway, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Warminster, petty sessional division of Salisbury and Amesbury, Wilton union, Salisbury county court district, rural deanery of Chalke (Chalke portion), archdeaconry of Sarum and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a cruciform building of stone, in the Transition Norman, Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, porch and an embattled central tower, containing a clock and 6 bells: it was repaired and re-seated in oak in 1876, under the direction of Mr. W. Butterfield, architect, at a cost of £2,000, and affords 279 sittings. The parish registers, including Teffont, are complete from the year 1558, and contain the record of the baptism of Henry Lawes, the musician, January 1st, 1600, and of Edward Hyde, the first Earl of Clarendon, February 22nd, 1608, who was born here. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Teffont Magna annexed, joint net income £226, in the gift of the President and Scholars of Magdalen College, Oxford, who are lay rectors, and held since 1886 by the Rev. John Heslop Audland M.A. and late Demy of that college. There are also about 30 acres of glebe, of which about 4 acres belong to the Dean and Canons of Windsor. Dinton House, the seat of William Wyndham esq. B.A. D.L. J.P. is a large handsome stone building, commanding extensive views of the surrounding country. The Earl of Pembroke, who is lord of the manor, and William Wyndham esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay, chalk and greensand; subsoil, same; many of the meadows are irrigated. The chief crops are wheat, barley, hay and apples; cider is largely made; there is also much dairy farming, butter and cheese are made, and milk is sent to the London market. The area is 2,560 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £4,072; the population in 1891 was 413.

Public Elementary School, built in 1875 by voluntary contributions, at a cost of nearly £900, on a site given by the Earl of Pembroke, for 111 children; average attendance, 90.
