Edington, or Heddington, which appears to have been a Roman station, by the foundation of houses dug up for a mile together, and many coins, silver and copper, found there.

HEDDINGTON is a parish 3 miles south from Calne terminal station, and 7 north from Devizes station by road, on the Great Western railway, in the North Western division of the county, Calne hundred, union, county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Avebury (Avebury portion), archdeaconry of Wilts and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, vestry, north porch and a western embattled tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the east window is stained, and there are tablets to the Revs. James Thomas Du Boulay, ob.1836, and Henry Rogers M.A. ob.1669: a floor stone to the Rev. Francis Rogers, ob.1800, and a brass to George John Majendie M.A. ob.1842: there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net income £180, including 15 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1853 by the Rev. Francis Houssemayne Du Boulay M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The Mission Room, built about 1894 by Miss Ann Hayward Clark, will seat about 60 persons. Here is also a Wesleyan chapel. The charities, amounting to £26 yearly, include Pearce's and 3 houses, the gift of an unknown benefactor, producing £7 10s. yearly; there is also the interest on £50, invested in stock, and distributed in money: Peplar’s bequest of £300, founded by deed in 1837, invested in stock and producing £8 yearly for gifts in money, provisions and clothing; and Pearce’s and Clark’s charities, founded by will in 1839 and 1855, the particulars of which are not reported. The Workmen’s Club, built in 1881, at a cost of £600, has reading and other rooms, and a coffee bar, and has a fives court and quoit ground attached; daily and weekly papers are supplied. The ancient earthwork, called the “Wansdyke,” separating the Belgic and aboriginal tribes, and commencing on the banks of the Severn, passed through Spye Park in the adjoining parish of Chittoe, and proceeded thence to the north of Heddington; the Roman road from Bath to Marlborough also ran through this parish, and followed for some distance the track of the Wansdyke. Near Heddington was Verlucio, a Roman station, and coins have been found in the ruins of ancient buildings in the vicinity. The principal landowners are Capt. John Edmund Philip Spicer, of Spye Park, Chittoe, Edward Trevelyan esq. The Misses Clark, Rev. F. H. Du Boulay M.A. rector, Rev. C. J.P. Eyre M.A. of St. Leonards-on-Sea, and the Rev. Edward H. Rogers M.A. of Thames Ditton. The soil is clay; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are corn and pasture. The area is 1,550 acres; rateable value, £1,779; population in 1891 was 316.
