This vital collection details almost 1.2 million properties eligible for land tax. Records include the name of the landowner, occupier, amount assessed and sometimes the name and/or description of the property. It is a useful starting point for locating relevant estate records and establishing the succession of tenancies and freehold. Most records cover 1798, but some extend up to 1811.

Historical Description
KEEVIL is a parish, 5 miles south from Melksham station, and 5 east from Trowbridge station on the Great Western railway, in the Western division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Whorwellsdown, Westbury and Whorwellsdown union, Trowbridge county court district, rural deanery of Potterne (Potterne portion), archdeaconry of Wilts and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Leonard is a plain building of stone, in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: there are monuments to John J. Harris, citizen and Alderman of London, dated 1657; the Blagden family, 1730; Jane Talbot, 1768; William Gaisford, 1754; and William Beach, 1741; and brasses to Jane Flower, dated 1662; Stephen Cox, 1761; John Halkens, 1689; Roger Jorden, 1669; Roger Blagden, 1687; and Eliza Gaisford, 1720: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. George Thomas Chamberlaine M.A. d.1858: there are 320 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £298, in the gift of the Dean and Canons of Winchester, and held since 1839 by the Rev. William Henry Chamberlaine M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. The Wesleyan chapel here, built about 1844, will hold 200. In 1852 George Taylor left £3,000, the interest of which is to buy bread for six poor men and six poor women of the parishes of Keevil, Edington and Steeple Ashton. An iron, hall was erected here in 1892 by Col. Sir John W. Wellington K.C.B and is used for concerts, entertainments &c. Keevil Manor House, an ancient mansion, in the Elizabethan style, is the residence of Col. Sir John Williams Wallington K.C.B J.P. William W. B. Beach esq. M. P. of Oakley Hall, Basingstoke, Hampshire, is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay and brash. The land is nearly all in pasture, the remainder wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,059 acres; rateable value, £4,760; the population in 1891 was 384.
