Historical Description

LONG NEWNTON is a village and parish, divided from the parish of Shipton Moyne, in Gloucestershire by a small stream, 1 ½ miles from Tetbury terminal station on a branch of the Great Western railway, in the North Western division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and county court district of Malmesbury, Tetbury union, and in the rural deanery of Malmesbury, and archdeaconry and diocese of Bristol. The church of the Holy Trinity is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, aisles, south porch, and a western tower containing six bells: it was restored and partially rebuilt, with the addition of the north aisle, in 1870, and has a stained east window, and memorial windows to the late rector and others: there are sittings for 270 persons. The register dates from the year 1648. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £230, including 15 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Rev. Edmund Hiley Bucknall-Estcourt M.A. (d.1894), and held since 1884 by the Rev. Edmund Walter Estcourt M.A. of Baliol College, Oxford. The charities amount to £61 yearly, £41 of which is applied to education and apprenticing. There is a Cottage Hospital, built by the late Right Hon. T. H. Sotheron-Estcourt, and supported by voluntary contributions. George Thos. John Sotheron-Estcourt esq. D.L. J.P. of Estcourt, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is various; subsoil, clay and stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 2,286 acres; rateable value, £2,420; the population in 1891 was 323.
