Historical Description

PLAITFORD is a parish and scattered village, on the borders of Wiltshire, and on the road from Salisbury to Southampton, 6 miles west from Romsey station on the Eastleigh and Southampton branch of the London and South Western railway, and 11 south-east from Salisbury; it is in the Southern division of the county, Alderbury hundred, Romsey petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Amesbury (Alderbury portion), and Salisbury archdeaconry and diocese.

By the Local Government Boards Provisional Orders Confirmation (No. 12) Act, 1895, this parish has been transferred from the county of Wilts to that of Hants.

The church of St. Peter is a very plain ancient structure of flint and stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and small western bell turret containing one bell: there is a handsome tile reredos and a three-light stained window: the font is believed to be Norman: there are 140 sittings. The register dates from the year 1770. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £127, gross yearly value £130, net £101, including 7 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Ilchester P.C. and held since 1871 by the Rev. Alfred Henry Gay M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, who also takes charge (voluntary) of the small civil parish of No. Man’s Land. The Earl of Ilchester P.C. is lord of the manor, and owns nearly all the land. The soil is sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 1,213 acres; rateable value, £953; the population in 1801 was 164.

National School, with residence for master, built in 1845, for 63 children; average attendance, 53.
