Historical Description

BOCKELTON (or Bockleton), is a parish, 5 miles south from Tenbury station on the Great Western and London and North Western joint line, 8 south-by-east from Leominster and 8 north-west from Bromyard in the Western division of the county, partly in Upper Doddingtree hundred, Worcestershire, and partly in Broxash hundred, Herefordshire, Tenbury union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Burford, archdeaconry of Ludlow and diocese of Hereford. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone of the Norman period, with remarkably good. Norman arches at the north and south entrances, and consists of chancel and nave, divided by a fine oak screen, and a western tower of later date with pinnacles, and containing 3 bells: there is a small side chapel of ancient date, containing a well-preserved altar tomb, with the recumbent effigies of an esquire armed, but bareheaded, with his hands joined and his gauntlets by his side, and beside him his wife between them is placed a helmet with crest, and at their feet respectively a lion and an eagle this monument commemorates Richard Barneby, formerly a landowner in this parish, and Mary (Habington), his wife, 1574; at the back of the tomb is an inscription between kneeling figures of five sons and four daughters, and above a medallion with arms; the front of the tomb displays three large quartered shields: in the church is also a marble monument by Thomas Woolner R.A. erected by the late Mrs. Prescott, in memory of her son, William Wolstenholme Prescott esq. who died in 1865: there are 150 sittings. The register, including Hampton Charles, dates from the year 1574. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £125, including 105 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Col, Richard, Prescott-Decie, and held since 1864 by the Rev. Richard Mence M.A. of Trinity College Oxford, and J.P, Worcester. Henry Morris, of Quinton, left in 1821 the sum of £166 13s. 4d. which was invested in the 3 per Cents, and the interest, £4 89. is distributed amongst the poor at Christmas. Col. Richard Prescott-Decie D.L., J.P. is lord of the manor and principal landowner and resides at Bockelton Court. The soil is clayey; subsoil, sandstone. The chief crops axe corn, hops and fruit. The parish contains 2,755 acres; rateable value, £2,235; the population in 1891 was 238.
