Historical Description

DODDERHILL, the civil parish of which adjoins Droitwich, extends 3 miles on the road to Bromsgrove, which lies north-east; it is in the Mid division of the county, upper division of Halfshire hundred, Droitwich union, petty sessional division and county court district and in the rural deanery of Droitwich, and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. A part of this parish, called the in-liberties, is within the municipal borough of Droitwich, and was in 1885, under the Divided Parishes Act, merged in the adjoining parishes of St. Nicholas and St. Andrew and St. Peter Within, Droitwich. The ecclesiastical parish is less than the civil parish bearing the same name by that portion which has been taken to form the parish of Wychbold. The chapelry of Elmbridge, formerly attached to Dodderhill, now forms a distinct parish. The church of St. Augustine, standing on a lofty eminence, immediately north of the town of Droitwich, was originally a fine cruciform structure of Late Norman, of which the north transept and part of the south transept still remain, but the nave was destroyed during the civil war; the chancel is Early English, and the tower which has been added to the remains of the south transept is Perpendicular and contains 6 bells: there are memorials to the families of Dannett, Phillips, Wyld, Penrice, Amphlett, Norbury, Brace and Holbeche the church, which had been much shaken by the subsidence of the ground, attributed to the pumping of brine, was restored in 1890 by the patron, J. Corbett esq. D.L., J.P. at a cost of over £3,000; Mr. Corbett also filled the east window and four others with stained glass: there are about 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1651. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £220, without residence, in the gift of John Corbett esq. and held since 1889 by the Rev. George Lewis M.A. of the University of London and M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford, who resides in Worcester road, Droitwich. Lord Hampton is owner of the impropriate tithes. Impney, the seat of John Corbett esq. D.L., J.P. in this parish, is described under Droitwich. Lord Hampton and Sir Harry Foley Vernon bart. of Hanbury Hall, are owners of the manorial rights. The principal landowners are John Corbett esq. Sir H. F. Vernon bart. and Richard Holmden Amphlett esq. Q.C., J.P. Dodderhill common, containing 40 acres, is finely timbered and uninclosed.

The soil is varied, from a strong clay marl to a sandy loam; subsoil, marl, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley and turnips. The area is 3,351 acres; rateable value, £11,730; the population in 1891 was 1,660 in the civil and 945 in the ecclesiastical parish. The detached part of this parish at Huntingdrop, 2 miles east of Droitwich, on the Hanbury road, is now annexed to Hanbury, and that at Timberhonger, 2 miles west of Bromsgrove, to Bromsgrove the former is the property of Sir H. F. Vernon bart. and the latter of the Earl of Shrewsbury and Talbot. A small detached portion has also been annexed to Hadsor and to Grafton Manor.

Wychbold with Astwood and Shaw Lane and Rashwood in this civil parish have been formed into an ecclesiastical parish.

This place is included in Stoke Prior United District School Board, formed in 1880, & the children attend the Board School at Rashwood, and the National Schools at Droitwich.
