Historical Description

FECKENHAM, anciently “Fecheham,” is a parish on the road from Droitwich to Alcester, 5 miles south-west from Redditch station on the Birmingham and Redditch section of the Midland railway, 8 south-east from Bromsgrove, 7 ½ east-by-south from Droitwich, 4 ½ south-west from Studley and 14 north-east from Worcester, in the Southern division of the county, Upper division of Half-shire hundred, Alcester union, Redditch petty sessional and county court district, Feckenham rural deanery and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. John the Baptist is a building of stone, in the Geometric Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a low embattled western tower with 4 pinnacles, containing a clock and 8 bells: the tower is part of the original building, but the chancel was rebuilt about 1853, under the direction of Mr. Butterfield, and the south wall and nave roof and porch were reconstructed in 1866—7: the stained east window in the chancel is a memorial to George Webb esq. of Astwood Court, and that at the west end of the nave to Mrs. Lucy Haywood: there was formerly in the chancel an altar-tomb with recumbent effigies of a knight and his lady and figures of three children, erected by Lady Joyce Culpeper, and inscribed to Sir Martin Culpeper, of Deane, in the parish of Spelsbury, county Oxon, her husband, who died 26th June, 1604; this monument, it is stated, was, on the rebuilding of the chancel, buried beneath the floor: there are sittings for 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £189, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Alfred Marshall M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge F.R.G.S, and M.I.C.E. There is a Free Methodist chapel here. A Free Grammar school was founded here in 1610 and endowed by Sir Thomas Cook with £56 13s. 4d. yearly: 12 children on this foundation are now taught in the National school. Charities:-Henry Hewes left 52s. yearly; Sir John Hanbury knt. 5s. weekly for bread; John Wiggett, 20s. yearly; Robert Hunt esq. the interest of £100 to the poor; Christopher Hunt esq. the interest of £100 to the poor; Samuel Watts, the interest of £30 yearly; William Butler the interest of £20 yearly and Job Burman 10s. yearly. The total amount is laid out in bread, distributed by trustees every winter, and in bread and meat at Christmas. The working classes of Feckenham are chiefly engaged in the manufacture of needles and fish-hooks, which affords employment for some hundreds of persons. The wake is held on the first Sunday after St. John the Baptist. A court leet is held at the Old Rose and Crown in October. Feckenham is remarkable as the birthplace of John de Feckenham, alias Howman, an eminent and learned Catholic divine, chaplain to Queen Mary, dean of St. Paul's and last abbot of Westminster: he held a conference with Lady Jane Grey, and at Oxford disputed with Archbishop Cranmer and Bishops Ridley and Latimer, and was the last mitred abbot who sat in the House of Lords, where he zealously defended the interests of his church; on the accession of Queen Elizabeth he was imprisoned in the Tower, and subsequently in Wisbech Castle, where he died in 1585. Dunstall Court, the residence of Alfred Gutch esq. is a modern building of red brick with stone dressings, in the Elizabethan style it commands some capital views and is pleasantly situated a little north-east of the church, which forms a pleasing object from the mansion. The Earl of Coventry (lord lieutenant) is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Edward Waldron Haywood esq. of Sillins, Callow Hill, the trustees of the late T. W. Webb esq. Sir Harry Foley Vernon bart. of Hanbury Hall, Col. E. H. Bearcroft, of Mere Hall, Hanbury, the trustees of the late James Smith esq. of Astwood Bank, Alfred and Arthur Henry Gutch esqrs. Mrs. Cheape, of Bentley Manor, Mrs. Ann E. Ingram, of Beoley, and Miss Phillips, of Ardencote, Claverdon Warwick. The soil is various, consisting of a strong clay, marl, gravel and sand. The area of Feckenham parish is 6,654a. 3r. 34p. two-thirds arable and the rest wood and pasture rateable value, £14,189; and of Feckenham Urban, 121a. 0r. 20p.; rateable value, £2,673; the population in 1891 was 4,584 in the civil and 3,544 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Parish Clerk, William Ballard.

The parish comprises Feckenham, Feckenham Urban and parts of Crabb’s Cross, Headless Cross and Webheath, Astwood Bank, and the hamlets of Hunt End and Callow Hill.
