Historical Description

MATHON is a large agricultural parish to the west of the Malvern Hills, on the borders of Herefordshire, 3 miles west from Great Malvern station on the Great Western railway, in the Western division of the county, Lower Pershore hundred, Ledbury union, Great Malvern petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Powick and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. John the Baptist, situated in a sequestered valley, is an ancient building of stone in the Norman and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, remarkable for the fine quality of their tone the east end is an unusually perfect example of the Norman style, and has two round-headed lights, with a circular one above, all of which are stained: the north and south doorways are enriched with the cable moulding, and there is some good ironwork on the south door: the chancel retains a plain Norman piscina on the south side, and on the north side an arched recess, supposed to have been an Easter sepulchre here also is a raised tomb with kneeling effigies of a gentleman, his wife and daughter, and an inscription to Jane, wife of John Walweyn, gent, and daughter of Paris Slaughter esq. 1617: there is a good oak chest with massive iron hinges and straps, each terminating in a fleur-de-lis: the pulpit of carved oak, hexagonal in shape, and panelled, is of Early post-Reformation date the octagonal stone font, with sculptured panels, was designed by Mr. Frederick Preedy, architect: there are four memorial windows and three small stained windows at the east end: the nave roof, which has been restored, is a very fine specimen of Decorated work of the 14th century: the church contains mural monuments and floor stones to several old Worcestershire families, and near the porch stands the base of an ancient cross: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1631. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £210, with 11 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster, and held since 1899 by the Rev. George Walpole Potter M.A. of New College, Oxford. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are the lords of the manor, the trustees of the late Lieut.-Col. Martindale Edwin Vale D.L., J.P. William Croxton Vale esq. and the trustees of the late Henry Tebbitt esq. of West Malvern, are the principal landowners. The soil is stiff marl and clay in some parts, and rich loam in others; subsoil, clay and limestone and in some portions, red sandstone. The chief crops are grain of all descriptions, and hops of fine quality are grown here, being known in the market as the “Mathon White.” The area is 3,366 acres; rateable value, £7,506; the population in 1891 was 1,203, which includes West Malvern; the population of Mathon being 379.

National School (mixed), erected in 1861, from designs by Mr. W. J. Hopkins, architect, of Worcester, for about 60 children; average attendance, 40; it comprises a residence for the mistress & has a picturesque bell-turret rising from the roof.
